November 2012

In recent years the great British institution of the pub had been under assault from all directions.

The smoking ban, tax increases on beer, social taboos on drink driving, health scares, the list of pressures on the pub go on, and earlier this year, according to CAMRA, a dozen or so pubs close every week in England.

But are the government's latest proposals, at long last, good news for the pub? Surely a minimum unit price for alcohol will lead to some sort of revival of fortunes for the pub, if only by reducing the benefit of 'fuelling up' on supermarket booze by hardened bingers before they go out for their blotto Friday night?

Surprisingly, the chief of Wetherspoons came out strongly against.

Great pub great local
The dodger is one of the best pubs in Edinburgh and has a long and good standing of regulars that drink there and the banter is great

Disatisfied customers
Here is a message I received this morning, verbatim. We we’re cheated. We turned up at the Links Pub last night, having seen on Facebook that your band was on. We know you are excellent from seeing you in Penwortham and Chorley. We got there about 9.45 but you had already left! We asked a local where you were, and he said that you played a great first set and then suddenly packed up and left. Apparently the landlord had told you that he wasn’t going to pay you – not even expenses – because it was a quiet night and he couldn’t cover the cost. We know you had travelled a long way and so had we. This is disgraceful. He not only cheated you, but also potential new customers. Although, as the pub was scruffy and dirty, and with little choice of beers, we wouldn't go back there anyway. If you are going to take legal action to recover your costs we’ll support you! It's all true.

Think you're right
I can't see how this would affect pubs... unless they're selling beer for 90p per pint if I have my calculations right (they propose a 45p min price per unit)
