About the Pub
Decorated in Gothic style this busy pub has skeletons and related macabre items 'hanging around' the walls. The floor has differing balcony levels and the toilets can possibly be found hidden behind an imitation bookcase! 'Spell Bite' is just one of the many spook related drinks from the long dark bar along with the regular 'human' kind. This is a popular pub but, unfortunately, the service can be slow during busy periods.

I visited this bar a while back and was disgusted that my Jack Daniels & cole was only half full, when i asked if I could have a full glass which Im sure I paid for, I was asked for an extra pound. i visited again on the weekend forgetting my first experience & was dissapointed the problem still existed. the bar is great unfortunately the staff are somewhat judgmental or their customers & seem to take a liking to only those who have common interests or similar to themselves in their quirky personalaties....I would sugest to take a look at the bar then leave

Middle-aged men refused service
I’m holidaying in the UK from Australia and was refused service by the unfriendly Manager because my 34 year old Asian friend was not carrying any identification. We have visited pubs all over the UK and this is the only place that has been a problem. I wonder why. My complaint was brushed aside. They refused to tell me the last time they’d asked a 34 year old Caucasian for his identification. The company said “Under the current laws the person responsible for running any bar is permitted to refuse service for any number of reasons ... a reason does not have to be given.” Left a very sour taste in our mouths and spoiled our visit to Edinburgh.

Sorry, thom, but like most people here, i love this place, i go there for the decor and the cocktails mainly but i have lots of wonderful memories there and even going back to celebrate my birthday this year, and if the bar tender took offense at you asking for a top up you obviously didnt ask in the right way

another awful pub
A pint of cheapest lager, Foster's in this case, cost you 2 pounds. And the fat ageing Goth bartender gives you a bad pint well short of 400ml, and when you ask to to fill it up, he would take an offence, AVOID like a plague. I am telling you for your sake, from the bottom from my heart! They are Mr Hyde not the Jekylle. Avoid!!!! there are lots of decent pubs in edinburgh, not this one.

The coolest of pubs
Dont know how any-one can fault this pub, the effort that has gone into the decor is amazing, the staff are all very friendly and attentive, the food is great value for money and i dont understand how people can complain when the prices are kept so low. Overall this pub has the best atmosphere and for my partner and myself was the best pub we visited in Edinburgh.

Great Eccentric Pub
We visited for one of the free comedy Fringe acts, Three Mousketeers - the acts were crap but the pub was quite the opposite!

This pub is fantastic, it has a great atmosphear and a good place for a laugh, on stag nights or partys. However when going to the toilet dont forget to take a book with you!!!

Security are rude and heavy handed.
Yesterday a friend was mistaken for someone giving the bar-staff hassle. They took his drink from him, and told him in no uncertain terms to get out, without any explanation. When they realised their mistake, he was told he could stay, but there was no appology, and no replacement drink.
