I live in Northampton and I happened to be in Epsom last weekend. I was told that the R H was a good place to eat. four of us went on Saturday evening for a meal. he food was excellent but the whole night was ruined by
noisy and out of control children.
Shall not be going again unless the owners decide to do something about this.

very friendly nice person
very unfriendly
we nearly went here yesterday for lunch. after you get past the blackboard of rules at the front door, expect a very unfriendly greeting and then be prepared to be looked up and down in disgust before being grudgingly shown to a table. we left at this point. Not worth trying to park here.

Most DREADFUL experience
Went to this pub yesterday with my wife and son. We’ve ordered food and tea for two of us, because my son does not eat this kind of food, so he had his lunch at McDonalds beforehand. Steak was good, fish and chips were awful. When finished the food had to wait for one tea 20-30 minutes, and 5 minutes more for second tea :) I thought that’s a really bad service and we decided to go away when we finish our tea.

BUT suddenly a very big and aggressive man approached our table, behind his back one of the waiters was waiting. Without presenting himself to us he quickly and rudely asked if we have finished with the meal pointing his finger at MacDonald’s bag that was sitting on the table since we got into this place. He was unbelievably rude and basically was bulling us and told us to go away now without even finishing tea. I said we not going until we finish, he called POLICE. I talked to the police officers and they were surprised because they were told that someone (myself) really misbehaving at the pub (crashing things and fighting with a staff). If anything than it was other way round and me and my family were bullied by this guy who refused to give his name and just said that he is an owner and I should get out.

This is the most DREADFUL experience of pubs/restaurants in my life. Think twice before going there or be prepared be bullied by so called OWNER.

Not the best impression you get when a COCKROACH is under the table! My friends and family were sitting around the table when my mother screamed in fear. I looked under the table to find a COCKROACH under the table! We left the restaraunt without paying or even finishing our drinks! Never will we go back again! We didnt even get to try the food!

Went to the Rubbing House recently and arrived 30 mins early for a drink, only to discover our 4 month old baby was not allowed in the bar area, even with a car seat. So we had to go over to the Derby arms, who were happy to accomodate us in the bar area for a drink to wait for our friends to show. Overall experience at the Rubbing House has much to be desired, we were rushed into choosing food, one of the dishes had to be sent back because it was undercooked and i had a dodgy stomach the following from something i ate. The problem with this place is the position is one of the best you will get, therefore floods of people show up particularly on a hot day and the owner has no motivation to a) improve the food b) improve the service c) relax the rules for families d) make the stay a much pleasurable experience.

The owner of this pub is an old fashioned, small minded bigot who does not deserve your cash! Does he not remember being a child? An ignorant fool not worth wasting any more time on. JUST DON'T GO THERE!

The worst food I have ever experienced...may whole family and friends were gathered at the rubbing house for a celebration...how wrong could we have been. most of the food must have come from the local Iceland Supermarket, inedible, the whole lot.......the staff were surley and rude, and indifferent to our complaiants. They could not have cared less. i would say GO ANYWHERE ELSE... Give the Robbing House, sorry Rubbing House a very very big wide berth...

not happy
i went there with my partner son and freind,
there was a sign outside saying no pushchairs and other stuff, so there for carried my son of 12months in.
we walked up to the watiress and asked for a 3seats and a highchair she then said we dont have highchairs dont you have a car seat you could use my son being 12months has a built in car seat so i said thanks and left.
two weeks later my friend informed me that he has some friends who went there with there children and was given highchairs i think that is dissapointing that we must have been judged by the way we looked that they are choosing who they will serve.

I am very suprised about the below comments from Caroline, we are regular's to the Rubbing House and we have always had a great meal as I understand from most of the Waiter's the food is bought in fresh.
I also don't think I would send my 10yr old daughter with my 2yr old to the toilet in a busy place!!! The team that work their are all very nice and attentive. I would not be put off by Caroline who was obviously upset about the money, I think the prices are more than resonable personally.

Bad food and service

Being a local person, I suggested to some out of town friends that we could
eat at the Rubbing House. My first misgivings were the list of ‘rules’ presented on a black board at the entrance of the building. Our three children ranged from
10 to 2 and half so I was grateful that we didn’t have to worry about the “no pushcairs” rule but assumed that no pushchairs didn’t also mean a zero tolerance to children.

My concerns are both about the food served and the waitress who served us.

Firstly, we ordered our food which was duly delivered and although some of the dishes were fine, the two fish dishes were really so badly cooked that we had to return them. The Salmon was hard and the vegetables were overcooked, wet and mushy. The Sea Bass dish contained potatoes that had black lumps in them. The potatoes were wet, mushed and looked like a soggy brown mess. When I go out for meal I expect my food to be cooked to at least the same standard that I could do for myself at home. I didn’t expect to be presented with wet ‘canteen’ style vegetables and fish ,which when cooked properly should be succulent, but which was dry and hard.

When we explained our concerns to the waitress, she was clearly impatient and took our dishes away so fast that she dropped all the cutlery on the floor and didn’t bother
to pick any of it up until she returned later on. She poured the wine without asking
any of us to taste it first. When we asked for the bill to be split in half between the two parties, the waitress split the £127.00 bill into £60.00 and £67?!

At some point during this meal, my 10 year old god daughter, kindly took my 2 year
old daughter to the toilet. During this visit our waitress admonished my god daughter and told her to keep the 2 year old quiet since this was a “restaurant and not a playground”. I did not hear about this until we had left the restaurant but I strongly feel that if there is no tolerance at all to a 2 year old on her way to the toilet then the restaurant should add to the list of rules that children are not welcome. This would have saved myself and my party from spending £127.00 on a meal that could have been cooked to a better standard by my 18 year old son.

Not good on Sunday
Went there last sunday with some friends who live nearby. Very long wait for food and very overcrowded. Food came and was very disappointing. Meat in the vegetarian dish - sent it back and got the same again! No apology. Other dishes cold.

They seemed more interested in turnover and having the cash registers full than customer service.

Would not recommend

Rubbish Food
After being introduced to the Rubbing House by a friend we were so pleased to a find a pub that had a nice atmosphere, with good food and drink and was reaonsonable priced, but that all changed on Sunday 8 October 2006. We decided to take my mum their on her birthday for Sunday Dinner. It should have been advertised as a Sunday Disaster and not a Sunday Dinner. The meat was foul, the veg was freezing cold, and the yorkshire pudding looked like it had never seen the inside of an oven. To be honest it was a disgrace that the owners of this establishment had the nerve to let food go out to customers like this. So to this end I will never be visiting the Rubbing House again and will advise anyone who ever mentions it not to go there. Oh and to anyone who is reading this I don't know anyone who works at the Rubbing House or the Derby Arms and I am just someone who was told about the place by a friend now I am not sure whether they really are a friend if so why would they send me someone like this.

Rubbing House Epsom Down
It seems to me that on this Website everyone seems to be slagging down Carol, Jenny and Zack.

Well, to these people GET A LIFE!!!!

I go up to The Rubbing House most Friday night's with my friends for a drink and it is the most pleasant place to go for a drink, as the staff is really helpful. I also occasionally go for a meal in the restaurant area and every time I have had a meal up there, I can never complain because I am a very fussy eater due to me being in a wheelchair and has too watch what I eat.

Every time I go there and there is something that I cannot have on the menu, Zack always helps me out with cooking something that I can cope with.

So all those people that have written comment's about Carol, Jenny & Zack, they are not true and always helpful to me.

Lies from losers!
It is a shame there are so many Derby Arms employees/liars/former members of staff with grudges who waste their free time bad mouthing the Rubbing House on here! You really need to get a grip. All these stories of food poisoning?! If half of them were true then the place would face closure but not one has been reported to environmental health! Trust me, the RH is a good place to eat and drink at good value.

Pleasurable, Good Value and Wholesome
Our neighbours suggested this place and they know we are keen food enthusiasts. They were not wrong! In the last two months, we have eaten here on average once a week both Lunch and Dinner. Tried something different every time and not disappointed by all means. Yes, it does get busy and the Staff are always doing their utmost to deliver as soon as. We have waited 20 minutes on just one occasion, but believe me, it was well worth the wait. It is clean, well presented and you feel you can entertain all your friends without any hesitation. My Loyalty Card is almost full !!

Good food and very helpful staff who care
Great palce.I am a local and have eaten here lots of times and would say that what started off as good food has now moved up a gear. The food is fresh, the menu changes with some excellent specials and the service is friendly -perhaps the moaners below reap what they sow with their naff attitudes.

Long wait for table - Food below average
Having arrived at 7.15pm we were told our table would be ready in 15 minutes - A further 30 minutes passed - when asked Oh the table is now being prepared. Still waited when enquired I'll tell you when was snapped back by a snotty member of staff. Further wait finally sat down 8.30pm. Food was poorly cooked a well done steak oozed blood. The chips not cooked thru' properly and the strawberry on the dessert were still frozen.
A totally dissapointing meal.

whilst the surroundings are nice the food is clearly lacking in both fresh taste and presentation, i ask the following anyone who visits to ask if they make all the food fresh? and haven't made it the night before? are all the sauces made or are they boil in the bag? is anything microwaved?
clearly all the above is true!!! also would the overweight manager who was making so much noise with his friends who were clearly drunk, to please quiet down!

An enjoyable evening
Five of us had a meal there last Friday. The specials of the day were interesting and the rabbit was delicious. All the food was well cooked and well presented. The service was excellent especially as it was fairly busy. Not a drinking pub but a good place for a meal at a reasonable price (drinks a bit expensive which is par for the course in these foodie pubs.
