David beck
Grandad started the pile bar
I lived at 79 silk street my mum and dad worked at listers mill. Grandad lewis lightowler started the club and gained funds with the intro of a swear box. Lots of money came in. My dad Willie beck was the Secretary for many years, we had in our teens great times in the club, playing football, and many fantastic disco night's. Great, great memories.

Community Club
I lived about 40 seconds walk from the Pile Bar (real name: The Plush Silk & Textile Workers Club) in the 70s, 80s & early 90s. It was the first drinking joint to change from the 2.00pm sunday lunch finish to 3.00pm and then onto all day. A very busy club, especially weekends, bank hols and Christmas day lunch. It had a large function room with a stage where they held many concerts, bands & comidians, even Chubby Brown played a gig there. It was a free house selling Stones & Websters ales and, in its final days, got a bad reputation for fights inside and outside the club. This club was on lilycroft road and only about 50yds from the lilycroft pub. It is now an asian textile shop and did not survive because as the local demographic changed it meant that about 90% of the local population do not consume alcohol.
