Interesting example of pub history in Gosport.
I haven't been in the Junction that often, considering it's just down the road from me. It's an intersting juxtaposition of traditional pub design in Gosport, and a half-arsed desire to modernise by the landlord in the 1980s.
There is nothing worng with the Junction, it does a decent range of beers and the clientelle and staff are friendly. I think it represents some of the feeling of hoplessness that pervaded Gosport towards the end of the last century, when the Navy pulled out and manufacturing in the town closed down. I think pubs like the Junction are an expression of that bewilderment felt by people in Gosport when their steady working-class lives were suddenly turned upside-down.
The Junction still strives to serve it's customers as best it can, and for that reason I think it should be nurtured and frequented by the local populace. My worry is that the landlord will decide that enough is enough and sell up. The Junction faces pressure from a new class of yuppie yacht-owners who want a nice chianti with their polenta. It would be a shame if the nouveau-riche managed to get the place brought out and turned into a wine bar, there aren;t many places left in Gosport that can claim to be honest pubs, i.e. those kinds of pub that serve beer and crisps without worrying about whether or not Jamie Oliver thinks their food is any good.
