Mr. Murdock
Thats just rude!!
I must make it very clear before going on, I used to go to school at St. Edmunds and after leaving in 2002, I used to frequent Simple Simons on a weekly basis and it was my favourite pub for a long time.
I do not live in Canterbury these days and a couple of years back I brought my girlfreind at the time down from Edinburgh(where we were living), to visit Canterbury and see a bit of my past.
We met up with some old freinds of mine (about five of us)and went to Simples for a beer.We sat up at the top left of the garden which is a lovely spot with a bench tucked away under a canopy of greenery and were there for some time when a chap came up from the pub to talk to us.
He was polite at first and started to explain that some sort of incident had occured some nights before, involving a couple of girls with dreadlocks and a man with long hair who had apparently started a fight and been escorted from the premises.(It would do well to mention at this point that I myself had long hair in a pony tail as did my two male freinds and one of the females amongst us had dreadlocks as well).
He then cut straight to the point and asked us if we could please leave after our drinks as the landlord didn't want our sort in his pub and that from now on all hippy looking types or even people carrying back packs,as I and my girlfreind were, having just got off the train, were banned. We were all obviously stunned by this and one of my freinds began to cry telling the guy that she had been coming to the pub for years and was clearly very upset as were we all. This made no difference and we were sheperded out of the pub. I have not returned since.
I don't know if the pub has changed hands now, if it has I apologise to any one involved at Simple Simons now. But to this day I have never encounted such rudeness and unreasonable preconceived judgment in an establishment.

I know what I saw Bianca
The barman was called Ted and he was the most remarkable individual I have ever seen. I arrived early and got stuck into a pint of Cathedral Ale which was totally undrinkable- so I exchanged it for Grand Union Canal or some such concoction, which again failed to stimulate my ale glands. Unperturbed I settled for Hopdaemon Skrimshander and it was lovely, just the thing to wash down the fishfingers and chips I had ordered under the tempting nom-de-carte: 'Goujons of Plaice on a Bed of Local Salad with Sautéed Potatoes'. After a time a large bearded gentleman appeared and explained the history of the building to me. Ted managed to drop a tray of glasses into the glass machine and spill six drinks before upending a slop bucket and provoking the wrath of the large bearded gentleman. There was a remarkable disc of seaside wurlitzer music playing, which I found charming. The salad cart was anything but tacky.

correction...
Kenneth mate - you are utterly confused. Simple Simons is not a Harvester - its a freehold and proud to be independent. No - we do not have a tacky salad cart either - but a medieval banqueting hall upstairs often used for parties - open from 6pm everynight as a restaurant.
And if you are still talking about Simples, then the barman was called NED, not Ted.

Charming country pub in the City
Wonderful, I loved it I'd never been to a Harvester before but was soon directed towards the charming salad cart, which, they did'nt have, where I was able to make my choice. Wonderful ales and two fantastic medieval Italian chefs. Barman Ted was fantastic.

Simple Simons- A Fab Pub!!!
My friends I spent this last New Years eve in Simples and we had a blast! It was my first time there, but I heard about it for ages from my friends who always went on about it how great it was. And they were not wrong! Old pub, blazing log fires, 21 types of beers on tap (yes I counted), great beer garden, amazing live blues band, great mix of clientele and suberbly attentive staff. The crew that was working that night were great fun and werent afraid to get into the spirit of the evening ( At one point the Canadian and Dutch Barman had a sword fight behind the Bar) such a laugh!!! And the barmaids, hot hot hot!!! This pub is surely one of the best I have ever been in. Next time Im in town I will for sure be back! Thanks for the great experince Simples!

Best Pub in the Land
A small pub situated in the heart of Canterbury... You can sit by a log fire, drinking the worlds best cider, listening to an amazing Jazz band, practically any night of the week. This pub is one of those classic ones that actually pulls off the feel of an old age pub...
Everyone is always friendly and happy, only downside is, it can get very busy on a jazz night, though never any trouble getting to the bar...
