Romeowed what Julieate...
Been in the Rochester area for awhile now and finally checked this pub out the other day. I'm glad to report that it was worth the wait; the live music was good though not loud enough that you couldn't hold a conversation, the atmosphere was nicely chilled, as was the Guinness.
I would thoroughly recommend this pub to anyone who fancies a quiet night out in pleasant surroundings, especially as The Granville Arms has gone down the pan since the new ownership,

We've been going to the Coopers for years, even though it is a three mile round trip. It is worth the walk and, without a doubt, the best pub in the medway towns,
You won't loud music, flat screen TV's or people on the pull but you will find excellent beer, friendly staff and decent people who just want a quiet drink and civilised conversation.

Excellent
I've been to this pub a few times now and can't think of a better place to go for a decent pint in the Medway towns. Not surprised 4-week-olds are not allowed. Bit harsh rejecting someone for wearing religious clothing, but can't say it upsets me too much. The Cooper's is NOT for you If you like the sort of pub that only sells Carling/Fosters/Stella and 600 alcopops, plays loud music from its selection of 6 videos on the jukebox and thoroughly encourages snarling at people for daring to speak. The Cooper's is the sort of pub where people wait their turn at the bar and have a relaxing drink with friends. Like it should be.

Agreed - top pub
Visited for the first time yesterday. Classic, welcoming and unpretentious. Great antidote to the faux-Dickensian nonsense that tarnishes the rest of Rochester. Really enjoyed the free roast potatoes and the Courage Best was perfectly kept. Pubs aren't for children, but perhaps they should be for Vicars!

Excellent pub
One of the best pubs in the world - yes world! The food at lunchtimes and the barbecues on balmy Friday evenings during Summer is of excellent quality, the beer is always well keptI have never and would never attempt to Skin up in any pub and am glad that the landlord bans people who do, I take my kids into the garden during clement weather and am not surprised that kids are banned from the bar, nothing to do with the landlord - that is the law of the land! Duh! I think the other reviewers are guilty of sour hops!

Not welcoming
We were refused service and asked to leave because we were accompanied by our 4 week old daughter!!
The reason given by the barmaid - no children allowed by order of the landlord!
