About the Pub
Just thought I'd give you an update as I'm the owner and have been for nearly 12 years! There are now only 5 genuine freehouses in the Old Town and this is one. We have 4 cask ales on most of the time and, as your recent reporter says a much better range of fresh, home-cooked food than used to be the case. We specialise in the small Scottish breweries and in serving dishes like Haggis, Neeps and Tatties, Stovies and Cullen Skink. We also give C..A.M.R.A. members a discount of 50p off their first pint. As we generally have among the lowest prices in the Old Town (apart from Wetherspoons) that means we can offer good value.

Two real ales, premium lager and a couple of dozen malts form the basis of the Halfway House's provision. They also stock a range of wines, in 14 bottles, called Minicellar which looks interesting. Food is restricted to filled rolls and sandwiches. This wee bar really is like someone's living room, with lamps and a few prints, and is kept spotless. Being only yards from the back door of Waverley Railway Station, they attract a lot of passing trade even if railway staff can no longer drop in for a pint in uniform. This is a quietish pub that is never actually empty, and over the years, like Jinglin's next door, became a bit of a press watering hole. They have a few regular customers and are popular with couples looking for a quiet corner. the amenities are accessible, but allow for the steepness of Fleshmarket Close.

What a unfriendly establishment AVOID!!!
We found the landlady to be one of the most objectionable rude people we have ever met.

This is not Edinburgh’s most friendly pub and a warm welcome is not waiting for you.

My Favorite Pub in all of Scotland
I found this tiny Pub 2 years ago on holiday in Scotland. I returned several times to take John's guided malt tours and learn from his expertise. The food is exceptional and almost magically appears from a kitchen no larger than a broom closet. I am going back next week (June 2009) I am excited to see John and Christine and learn more of the history of Scotch as only John can relate it through illustrated examples.

Excellent Local Pub
I spent my first night in Edinburgh for over 20 years 2 nights ago, and was lucky enough to stumble on the Halfway House.
A 'real' pub, a million miles away from the Weatherspoons of the world.
Friendly staff, and a good crowd of locals & visitors for the fringe. Combined with specially selected beers from local brewerys (regularly changing for the fringe) and a reasonable selection of maits ensures my return on the next trip.

The Halfway House
Dear bestpubs:-
In 2004 I had the joy of visiting the Halfway house--I got a warm welcome, a lovely bowl of cullen skink, a gentlemanly gift of a map of Scotland(which I still have) and good memories. It is one of the high points of my visit to fair Alba, and one of the reasons I would love to return. Edinburgh, and the Halfway House, are wonderful. Scotland is a wonderful, gorgeous place. I've a little piece of my heart still there! Peace to all, Tina

More beer to your elbow
The Halfway House, a little gem in the heart of Edinburgh. Things have changed a little since the last report was written. I called in last week and there are now 4 handpumps on the bar. Only 3 were in use at the time but the potential is there. Food has changed also. The blackboard menu is not extensive but it is quality, and the prices are very reasonable for the city centre. I can recommend the Cullen Skink, a creamy fish soup, tastes better than it sounds. To finish the evening I tried one of the nice range of malts.
This is a unique place. It doesn't offer a lot in the way of size but it is a haven for the person who doesn't want mass production. I will be back soon.
