 Lots of Fun
Love 💕 the Noble used to drink here during the sixties only place I felt safe dressed in Drag
Used to leave my dresses and wigs at the pub and the queens would come from miles around for the Saturday night dances
Glad to see it’s still going strong

 My Edinburgh local
The Scotsman lounge has been my Edinburgh local for a couple of decades . I visit Scotland every 18 months or sonfrom Tasmania & my first & last stop is the Scotsmans Lounge on every trip for a pint or 2 listening to fine singers especially Doogi Rush. Great welcoming staff & a true local pub in the heart of the Royal Mile. Awesome sessions & treasured memories. Thankyou!

 Fantastic day
I was through in Edinburgh a week or so ago. It was wonderful. I loved Erin and Harriette. Both were so sexy. They danced so close and got me so excited. I will be back soon. It is so friendly and the beer is a reasonable price.

I went in here years ago and after asking for a drink the idiot woman (I guess the old woman owner) said 'I have seen you before' and just kept saying it in a strange way - at first I was genuinely trying to help her place me until I realised she was just being difficult and finding the rudest way possible not to serve me. I told her if she did not want to serve me then just say it and left. If this place is just for regulars I guess it must be ward 10 of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital along the road.

Sad memory still of what had been a lovely time !
Perhaps 2004 or thereabouts, which can be verified by the management as the following incident was related the following day by a hand-delivered letter, the following experience happened. I had entered this establishment around 2.30p.m. one day, and perhaps was only one of no more than a handful of other customers. I was greeted by a young bar-tender and had a pint of Guinness, as I remember, sitting at the bar enjoying conversation with the bar-tender. Having left my mother literally across the other side of the street at Jamaica Mews, I left as my intention was to ascertain whether I felt I would like to take my mother across to the bar, who is a lady who has just turned ninety-five years old. Five to ten minutes later my mother and I entered and sat away from the bar enjoying each other's company, and our craic. By around five o'clockish the bar became busier, particuliar as it was nearing the end of some business employees working day. My mother and I had several drinks in an ordered and even fashion and a table to our right became occupied by three, perhaps four respectable younger ladies. After they had sat there for fifteen or twenty minutes or so as they were on my immediate right-hand side I happened to make a civil comment to which they responded happily and another by me to which there was laughter. That was the end of any exchange. I was there to be there with my mother, and had no need of any other company, being always open to persons entering ours should it happen, with grace. When I next went to the bar to order another drink for ourselves, a new bar-tender who had come on duty around five o'clock after serving, said ' could I stay in my own company '. I was bewildered by this but made no mention of it to my mother. Around six thirty time my mother required to go to the toilet, and I escorted her there as there were stairs to it and she did not know where to go anyway. I waited in that ante-room and eventually perched myself on the cushioned window-sill patiently waiting for my mother. Two young gentlemen who were enjoying their conversation after a few moments acknowledged the fact that I was there, so we exchanged pleasantries, and fell silent. Whilst still waiting for my mother the bar-tender appeared at this section and removed some empty glasses and said, ' I thought I said to stay in your own company ', to which I made no response, as he walked away. I escorted my mother back to our seats. A few minutes later I returned to the bar and ordered, and was served. Eventually I returned to the bar once again and was told ' I was not being served '. On my return I discreetly mentioned to my mother, in time, what the situation was, and so eventually we left.

This type of behaviour should never be acceptable. What issue the bar-tender had I do not know I did not ask him. All I should like to end this tale is by saying I am not in the habit of being asked to leave a licensed premises. Indeed I have been known to be encouraged to stay by an establishment's ambience.

I have never returned to this bar !

In every tale there is a story, I trust you never have to tell yours.

 Unwelcoming & Overweight Ugly Strippers
Went last night on my own fancied some action upon entering was given dirty looks by two of the strippers. Girl that approached me was seriously overweight & ugly. Was told to put my drink on the bar before a private dance, drink was then removed. I've been to some quality strip joints in London this place hasn't got a clue. The girls are mostly middle aged, at least slightly overweight, average looking all they do have is attitude. Trust me avoid this place go across the road.

 Simply the best
What a fantastic place. A beautiful hole in the wall with one or tow fantastic dancers. For just GBP 5 a dance, to have the beautiful black-stockinged legs slide down my trousers ..... beautiful!
Friendly bar-tender and great beer at a reasonable price too. Forget the other GBP20 a dance places - this is absolutely the best value for money.

What is this latest trend in Edinburgh pubs all about? Every pub you go into now in the afternoon has reserved signs from a certain time on the tables. Since when could you reserve a table in a pub? Or is this the staff keeping tables for regulars and friends?

 Rude staff on night out
While out listening to music in a Grassmarket bar last night, I ran into the staff of Dropkick Murphys on a staff night out. One man, who I was told was the bar owner, tried to get me to dance, and when I wasn't interested, attempted to forcibly pull me up. Then, apparently unable to understand that I didn't want him anywhere near me, he continued to harass us, putting his feet up on our table and sticking his finger in my ear. Meanwhile, one of the other Dropkicks staff was hassling the musician, licking him and sticking his tongue in his ear despite repeated requests to stop – had the singer been female, this would certainly have been seen as sexual assault. In the end, we had to request that this guy be removed from the bar.
To their credit, most of the staff were just drunk and having fun, and several did apologise on behalf of their less pleasant colleagues. Nonetheless, while none of this happened in Dropkick Murphys itself, I'm certainly not going to return to a bar where the owner harasses and manhandles women and allows his staff to intimidate and inappropriately touch staff in another bar.

Best fish and chip sharing platter
Last Friday my daughter and I made a day trip to Edinburgh to meet up with my sister in law from Livingston.
After walking the Royal Mile we decided to have lunch before hitting the shops, so we all had a Tennants lager to quench our thirst and decided to share the fish and chip platter.
Delicious choice - white fish (I hate any shade of grey fish) scampi, sausage bites, onion rings and chips. Served with small bowls of ketchup, mayo, mushy peas and tartare sauce.
Pleased I didn't read any reviews before heading up there.

 Great bar
What a great place, if you want to be cool, this is not the bar for you.. if you want to party, this is definitely the place for you. the piano man plays all the songs you want to sing and dance too at the top of your voice, like pianoman, don't stop believing, hey jude etc.. drinks are pricey as it is a late night, live entertainment venue, open til 3am..
entrance is free, and the doorman are some of the most accommodating in the city.. if you like rock'n'roll high energy piano entertainment.. its the bar for you!

fingers has been around for over 25years and has a faithful and loyal customer base.. people from all walks of life, working class, upper class, students. the typical customer is the kind of person who doesn't notice 'how sticky the floor is', especially when their hands are in the air and having the time of their life. people don't come to fingers to find themselves, they come to loose themselves!!

well worth trying out.. gets busy from midnight onwards..

 Good beer
Beer is generally first class. Some info here is out of date (there's no longer a laundrette next door!). Not a patch on its Southside outlet though (same name), mostly as the Southside staff are more welcoming. Needs to improve its attitude to customers in Broughton, but otherwise a fine drinking pub.

 Marriage wreckers....
If guys go to watch the girls fine I get. it its a fantasy a bit time out of reality.... . What I don't get it that the girls are allowed to socialise out with this bar. Swap numbers go out drinking with their clients etc. etc.... talk about keeping your bread and butter. To keep the pretence that they are actually interested in the guys let them believe these girls actually give a shit about them... my husband (now ex) was seeing one of the girls.... albeit she actually had a boyfriend bet he didn't realise what she was doing. Or was he in on it? She Let my stupid fickle husband actually think he had a chance woth her.... Total marriage wrecker she even had the odasity to tell me when i found her number yeah he spoke about you and i saw photos of your kids. FFS really.... I really thought it was a place to serve these men not lead them out if their marriages and break up there family's. MERCEDES.. OR SHOULD I SAY HEATHER.... you should be ashamed if yourself you have broken up a family with small children with your antics outside your place of work! THIS IS WHY IT SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED. ... MEN ARE MEN.... They always think grass is greener n you leading them in really does not help.i will be complaining to your manager through time as don't think this would go down well....

 A Luvly Pub
Stopped off here for a drink after our Water of Leith walk, and what a luvly pub, sat throught the back with comfy couches and an open fire, a great amosphere, people who I assume where locals chatting to each other from other tables, no music or tv in this area, a great place to chill and relax after our walk, the bar area was busy with locals, football on the tv, but a friendly welcoming pub with a really nice barmaid, recommend a visit, its a proper friendly pub with atmosphere

Billy Maclean
One of Edinburgh's oldest and finest
Ryrie's... The oldest bar in Haymarket but still the best, the place oozes in character and is not only situated in a prominent position in Haymarket but also holds a great deal of history and stands proud as a prominent piece of the forgotten Edinburgh among the tall concrete and metal buildings that we see today, the modern tramway center and new shiny metal train station which tower over the site of the old Caledonian Ale House are a fine example of what we stand to lose if we turn our backs on historical Edinburgh pubs such as this one. I have visited numerous times over the years and have also witnessed the pub change hands a number of times and now see the front face has turned blue, however the stripping of grey from the interior has regained much of the lost character from when it was painted grey. Ryrie's remains a strong sport center for Murrayfield and Tynecastle and vast improvements have been made since my last visit in 2013.. Improvements include that of staff and as I scroll down to previous comments involving old staff I must say that they are most likely true though again I am pleasantly surprised to see a new team of well mannered smartly presented uniformed staff now in place. Long live Ryrie's... Treat her well!!!!!

 Nice Place
I finally plucked up the courage to enter this notoriously elitist pub during the Easter holidays and half expecting to be turned away at the bar I have to say the staff were very pleasant, welcoming and helpful. Perhaps my 40+ year old face helped! Great selection of whisky and a nice place to sit down for a chat.

Could be improved with some classical music as it is an unusual pub we could do without quotidian vibes:)

I've visited in on my birthday for the last couple of years with my brother, it's a tradition I hope to carry on for a long time. Small in size but huge in atmosphere, the girls are stunning and down to earth. Not your normal club, thankfully, you can have a proper drink and laugh. Ten out of ten.

Bars members of our military in Full Dress Uniform, but happily spends its profits that it makes while being defended by these same men and women. Lock on toilets is surreal. You spend over £3 for a pint but have to ask to spend a penny ? However, pub is a good navigational aid to head off to 'The Wash which is a decent pub with nice friendly approachable staff

 Staff with an attitude
Everything would be great if it wasnt for an unfriendly staff! Such a shame. I would siggest to the owner to train or check on his/her staff regularly. It could have been such a nice experience if some female staff didnt give us an attitude on several occasions during ONE evening(16/04/2013). Also £14 for three drinks sounds a bit overpriced.

This is a real shame as the pub is in one the pest locations for a sunday lunch.. bar staff and food service arrogant and make customers feel not wanted while they chatter to each other.. but food is simply AWFUL - they serve whatever they can get away with.. and if you complain they make out the customers is at fault... i cannot emphasise enough what a complete let down this place is.

 Hard worker
On monday afternoon of this week I dined at the Edinburgh Slug and Lettuce.

I was served by Kofi.

During the time I was there he was on his own - greeting, taking orders, serving the orders and then clearing the tables. He never stopped and yet had time for all your customers.
I feel that you should know what an asset you have. Perhaps also he could have done with a little more help!

I'm sure that customers are ready to complain but I wish to praise. I have no connection with Slug and Lettuce or any employee.

Visited Filling Station on Friday 5th October 2012 and be warned... Ordered a pint of Tennants Lager and a 250ml glass of wine and was flabergasted to find the price was £10.80 !!!! (Live locally in Edinburgh)

£3.80 for the pint, fair enuf .....

But wait for it £7.00, Yip £7.00 for a glass of average pinot gricio......

Rip off Britain or what... what do tourists think if visiting Edinburgh...

I suggest the bottle would not cost that amount...

Hand your heads in shame Filling Station... Be Warned :(

 Very poor service
They advertise a breakfast, so I went in yesterday at 11.15am and ordered one.
The woman at the bar told me, Oh, we've run out of eggs. Therefore no breakfast! Even though there's a big supermarket straight across the road, and several other grocers within minutes walk.
This is quite funny in some ways, but actually it shows an appalling approach to service.
Better go elsewhere.

This is the first time i have been in this pub, even though I live locally (having heard bad reviews about it being a 'regulars only' pub).
The decor, i adore. It is a very quaint and warm pub and the young man who served us was absolutely lovely.
I only have one complaint and that the ill-fitting music which confuses the atmosphere. Maybe more subtle piano or acoustic music is more fitting than power ballads would be suitable.
However, lovely experience, do not avoid due to the bad reviews until you try for yourself :)

Yeah, taxi's are insane. I don't know why they crahge so much money to drive such short distances. When I was in South America a couple years ago, taxi's were so unbelievably cheap even when gas down there was equivalent to $6.00/gallon in US dollars. I don't know why they simply don't go to all of the nearby restaurants and convert the buses to run on filtered cooking grease like they do the grease cars. The buses could run for nearly for free if they would do this. Diesel taxi-cabs could do the same and save everyone money.

 Food service shocking
Bought food from upstairs and waited easily 45 minutes to be served despite there being only one other couple.
After leaving the pub and most of the very poor food behind I felt ill and brought up what little food I had eaten.
Another couple left due to waiting too long on service.
The waitress tried very hard but as a whole the pace was a shambles.
The toilets were also disgusting.

 Knowledgeable staff and a ghost?
My mate and I enjoyed a couple of good ales in here. A female bar member was very knowledgeable and gave advice on the ales and types. I also had a strange experience when sitting on a stool I felt something nudge at my left leg quite strongly. I looked down expecting to see a dog and there was nothing there. There was nobody anywhere near to me either. I was quite sober and quite surprised!

 Tartan wearers beware!
Think twice about visiting this pub if your dressed in tartan as you'll not be welcome. We were on a hen night dressed in full tartan(kits etc) and refused entry as we were told by an abrupt doorman that they didn't let fancy dress in! First time I've heard of tartan being fancy dress especially in Scotland and from an irish pub!

The Canny's is a fantastic pub to drink, eat and socialise in. The Staff and management are friendly and always helpful and with everything from the crisp white table clothes to the frozen champagne glasses its hard to say things aren't done to the highest standard in there. For the very short minded comments bellow - If you want to drink in a monotone pub with no atmosphere thats your choice, Im sure the other pubs close by are right up your street. It was our 1st visit to the old chain pier and first impressions were that it was well laid out and decorated, nice views etc however it went down hill from there. Stood for a while before I then had to ask where to sit and had to ask for menus.

We were very surprised at how tiny the portions were and food very average once it finally came. I would recommend for drinks only!!

 Great Place
On a one day visit to Edinburgh (not nearly enough by the way) we were lucky enough to find the Deacon Brodie Pub. had lunch and a few beers.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. Let me taste the various beers so I order one I knew I would enjoy. Ian was fantastic, and talked us into trying Haggis, which was delicious! Can't say enough about how welcoming the people were.

It would be my everyday pub if I wasn't in the US instead of Edinburgh!

waiters don't have a clue. took plates away while people will still eating - extra butter was thrown onto the table. asked to order a dessert, received the menu but the waiter never came back to ask if we'd like to order. not recommended for large groups. pie with veg - no veg to be seen only a few salad leaves. pity. they have an awful lot to learn.

Hubby and I visited a few weeks ago for lunch, we had previously been quite a few years ago and had been disappointed with every aspect of our visit then. How different now! We will certainly be back.

was very average though staff were friendly and helpful. However a bunch of moronic makes in bar totally ruined our evening by shouting and ringing football songs at thetop of their voices so much so we couldn't hear ourselves speak. Staff totally disinterested when we mentioned it. Manager on night off. Things May have been better had he been there. Won't return.

 Cask Marque: EXPIRED
I'd heard the Phoenix had improved a lot lately. The last time I was in, five years ago, there was a guy snorting lighter fuel from a canister down his sleeve, but no-one seemed to mind as he was a regular.

I suppose the Cask Marque expired sign on the front should have been a warning. We went in on a quiet Tuesday night and the barman managed to mishear A pint of gold, please and Oh and another as a request for a pint of Edinburgh Gold and an IPA. Given the taste of the gold, maybe we should have taken the IPA (although it was a *very* short measure), but the IPA was swapped for a second gold with very ill grace. When we sat down, we tookone sip and decided the beer was undrinkably vinegary. The barman - surlier than ever - claimed the beer was just on (unlikely on a quiet Tuesday) tasted it and said it was fine. To confirm, he handed the beer to the other barman who failed to hide the facial pucker as he also claimed the beer was fine.

We left the beer on the table and left the pub. Maybe I'll try it again in another five years.

10/10 for the worst food ever
Ridiculously over-priced. Baked potato with cheese - or rather cheese glued to the plate and none on the actual potato. The salad looked a week old, my guess is the cheap tesco brand?

Chicken burger - looked like 2 defrosted chicken breasts with a piece of raw bacon on-top. Sickening.

My advice - sack the chef and buy some fresh food!

Had the pleasure of visiting the Western last Sunday night after the Football. Few of my mates has been in the previous night and one of them pointed out a girl who I later found out was called Hannah. Oh man I was not dissapointed. Best dance ever and such a fantastic girl. Said she was back in on Wednesday but I never managed to get in despite my best effort. Been back in twice since but she has not been on. Now a week or so before I can get back to see if I can find her again.

Never again will I return.

Great pub, great beer, good atmosphere great staff... apart from the girl with dreadlocks. I honestly have never been so fecked off with a member of bar staff as i have with this girl. I have ALWAYS been nothing but polite to her, as have my friends and yet every time i go in there she is unbelievably rude and confrontational. Since when has shouting Yes? at someone when they're looking at the beer board been an ok way of getting their attention and asking what they'd like? I can accept people having a bad day but she is permanently in a furious mood. I'm not the only person to complain of this, I've heard loads of people remark about her after coming back from the bar. I don't bother going in there now as the thought of having to order a beer off her totally puts me off. It's just massive hassle when all i want to do is have a beer in the only pub in the area worth visiting. Get rid of her and you have a 5 star pub, probably the best in Edinburgh. Shame.

 Fabulous, fascinating, loved it
So glad we took a taxi out of town, this is one of the most memorable pubs we've ever been to. Loved the decor and the old fashioned service, and found the staff extremely welcoming and informative about the pub's past - definitely not rude. This was the first time we've ever been so we're certainly not regulars - we live in Yorkshire! and were visiting Edinburgh for the weekend. Would love to return next time we're there, and hope this unique place never changes.

I recently went to the canny mans for drinks with friends . I found the customer service was excellent particularly from one young gentleman. He had an extensive knowledge of the wines available and the information was worded in an excellent manner. We were offered complimentary nibbles and the wonderful table service resulted in no empty glasses. Furthermore there was a very impressive complimentary buffet! We shall certainly be returning for a relaxed, friendly evening !

I recently had an evening meal at the starbank with my girlfriend and was disgusted by the lack of hygiene that the person that served us had. the woman wearing black clothes was sweaty, had bad breath and smelled of BO! she was more interested in serving a large group than us. I am used to dining in fine eateries and this place is certainly not one. I was even thinking of complaining to Bellhaven over this but I was persauded not to by my girlfriend since it was christmas time..My girlfriend and I will not be returning. Nigel

I often go to the filling station for drinks, my husband and i wanted some breakfast so we called in for a bite to eat. We were shown to a seat then we waited... waited... waited,,, and then a waitress came to our table and asked what would we like, we then ordered our breakfast and waited... waited again for around half an hr before we got the breakfast. I am know the filling station is buzy but a half hr is a long time to wait. One thing i can say is that the prices are not to bad, it's only if you order a drink it gets expensive

Great food as always and took our guests from Canada for a meal.

 Worst meal in Edinburgh
I visited the Filling Station with my husband and 10 year old son on Tuesday 27th December 2011. The girl on the desk was very nice and we were seated after a short wait. However all downhill from there. Place was busy but plainly hugely understaffed. We were on the upper floor but I only saw one waitress for what is quite a big restaurant. There was another young male waiter but I only saw him wander vagely back and forth a couple of times and did not appear to be taking orders or serving. We were offered the lunch menu which goes up till 5pm and appeared to be very good value. I think 2 courses were £7.95. It took a wee while for our orders to be taken and then five minutes later the waitress cames back and said that she had't written our drinks down and what were they? It took another 10 minutes for them to arrive. My husband and I both ordered potato skins and fish and chips. My son ordered a pizza. The potato skins when they arrived were poor quality and barely lukewarm. However, it took another 45 minutes for our mains to arrive. At this point we had been in the restaurant for over an hour and my son had not yet had anything to eat! The waitress dumped the plates and walked away. My husband took one look at his and declared he wan not eating it! the fish was clearly overcooked to being almost burnt. I tasted mine and the chips were almost cold and were obviously not freshly cooked. The fish was dried out and tasteless and resembled those cheap fillets you can buy in Iceland. My son liked his pizza. We complained to the girl on the desk, paid for our drinks and pizza and left. DO NOT GO HERE. IT IS AWFUL.

If anyone was there it was me
I was there when the Americans were told to show or go. Big Baz the barman (the Bazmanian Devil to regulars) put down his cheeseburger and asked the girls and bloke to show ID since they were all very skimpily dressed. They refused and called him a douchebag (dunno what that is). Baz escorted them out and one of the girls kicked over a sign outside and shouted take a hike, tubby! to Baz.
Cloisters is a lovely family pub that does not need that rowdy behavior. Baz Whopper With Cheese XL the Barman is quick to defuse any situation though.

 em maybe no.
I was in this bar last Friday,to my surprise it has been taken over, and is in a dreadful state of affairs.it was around 11pm there was about 10 people in,from what I remember it was black Friday, grassmarket bar, heaving, black bull, heaving, perhaps if they gave this bar a deep clean, people might return.MAYBES!! It's dirty, and I mean dirty, the tables were sticky, sauces all over the tables, the paper covering the bar is falling off.side omg,I felt like I had ocd,and wanted to clean it up,and take the fuckn mobile fone of the barman, how rude. To sum this place up,I say get the new owners out,out,out..bring back the old ones..shocking!! Minging!! Empty!! Dirty!! Untidy!!grimebusters needed, environmental health, need to close this filthy bar down.

 Christmas Lunch
In the 30 years that we have lived at Cramond Brig and through the various managements that we have experienced, we can say in all confidence that today was the best meal we have ever had at The Brig.

We know from talking to the staff the hours that have been put in to get things right. They must be exhausted.

Laura and Jack deserve to succeed and we hope that today was a business success.

Well done and congratulations and we hope these comments get to the staff.

Thank you again for a great lunch.

Was there year this and it was wonderful but cant say that after my visit today! Was with my 7 yr old daughter and my friends and one who had her little girl and boy. The kids played in the room whilst we had our starters which was lovely. Then the pizzas came. My friend returned hers then two of us couldn't eat their neither could the kids. Then I noticed the fruit shoots were 2 months out of date! My friend asked for the mananger. She said there would be no bill twice to us. The kids then had some ice cream then she gave us a bill for the startes and kids meals! We had only got out the door when my friends boy was projectile vomitting. Went back inside and asked to see the manager and the owner came out! He apologised but still felt they could have offered a better service. Certainly wont be back!

 Names of Poets
It must be well over a decade ago that I first drew attention to the management that the names of Norman MacCaig and Hugh MacDiarmid are misspelled on the elaborate notice you have outside your entrance. Nothing was done about it, nor on a subsequent occasion I drew attention to it. It really looks bad in our Capital City and does your business no favours..

Given the fuss they make of the bar's literary history, you'd think they'd at least spell Hugh MacDiarmid's and Norman MacCaig's names correctly on the signage. Clearly don't care that much about literature, as long as it helps bring in the punters.

Didn't believe the ' stories', but i witnessed first hand when I visited. Opened the door, immediately got the ( your no worthy) scowl. Two feet from the bar, got the sorry we only serve regulars patter. I questioned this politely and reasoned that I only wanted a quick pint, I got a tirade of extremely rude abuse which I feel was an attempt to make me back off and feel inadequate. Wrong!!!! I let the staff member finish the whinge and then let go with both barrels ( no swearing) that 1) I didn't know who they thought they were, but rest assured they or noone else in there was any better than me. 2) They could keep their pub and their pretend upper class tosh. Oh well, I left to carry on to my next assignment, oh thats right, I didn't mention I was a Mystery Shopper asked to compile a report on the place.

I wish there were more places like the Black Bull
Great music, friendly staff, excellent atmosphere, always. However, if you don't want to listen to loud rock/metal and be surrounded by people dressed in black with piercings, tattoos and leather, then don't bother showing up. The regulars will definitely appreciate it.

The public house is for regulars only...
I used to really like the Canny Man's. It's an interesting and unique place, the beer was decent and the food OK. It was pretty civilised.

Mr Kerr even seemed to take a shine to me and my wife on our first visit many years ago.

But after living locally and visiting more regularly, I just saw too much rudeness, officiousness and downright snobbery.

I saw four men thrown out after Mr Kerr misunderstood them trying to help a woman with a pushchair in the beer garden one afternoon, and refusing to back down once he realised he'd got it wrong. I've seen perfectly respectable people who were behaving impeccably asked to leave for no reason that anyone could fathom. I've seen the owners strive to look as far down their nose as they can at too many perfectly good customers. And far, far too often, I saw ordinary, well-dressed, well-mannered people told at the door, Sorry, the public house is for regulars only.

Two words: Fawlty and Towers. Although generally pretty well run, the owners and staff display the same attitude to their customers as Basil does to his guests. If you don't fit their narrow 1950s petit-bourgeois idea of respectability, they may throw you out. Or they may just suffer you to stay - as long as they get to show their utter disdain for you and the grubby little world you represent.

People - presumably those who are in the in group - seem to regard this as quirky, charming, or delightfully old-fashioned. It's not. It isn't about excluding a rowdy or rough element either. It's just nasty, undiluted class aggression.

Which is ironic, since the owners and many of the staff have no class whatsoever.

Got a lot 2 say about this em pub?? It's a hovel, what a messy dusty hole.
It was very very quiet when I was there on sat night, there was a doorman on,why? He was okay, welcoming and friendly which is more than I can say about the staff. Had a wee look at the other comments on here and I have to agree with the majority its shit now,and I especially agree with one comment a while back i/we reckon the positive comments are made up by staff and family. It's such a shame was a clean tidy bar with good food and service, and was busy every weekend no matter what time you went in. Oh one more thing to add fiddlers could you put any more seats in? Then there could be even less room. This pub? Is honestly the worst I have ever been in. Oh sorry one more thing to say DON'T GO IN, IT'S A SHIT (pub?) PLACE. Sorry again another comment why is there not a minus button on ratings this place needs it.

Further to the comments left by previous patron. I am still at a loss to work out how you go from asking dog to shut up to being a gay basher!!!
Maybe the dog owners need to be more In tune with there dog than there sexuality?

Yapping dog owned by irksome Gay man???
The comments made by the gentleman about his young yapping dog are curious to daft - where is the correlation between the patrons dissatisfaction about having to remove a noisy dog (a totally reasonable request) and the suggestion/allegation that the bar tender has shown disquiet at the customer's sexual orientation??? A preposterous notion with no foundation whatsoever - idiotic and self indulgent oversensitive clap trap - Kay's is an excellent establishment and continues to this day even after 25 years of patronage!!

I work backwards and forwards in Edinburgh. Was in this bar when it was a dull depressing hole called Bar Alba and vowed never to go back again. Went back in last week when I was back over drawn in by the fiddling music and had a night of mighty Craic. The pub is a weird sort of Irish Scottish shabby chic mash up which bizzarly works.  the Port
I can think of no better description than to say this is simply an institution.
Had it reverted to selling some of the best cask ales on the market, it would have the entire complement of rosettes from me. Idiosyncratic, historic, probably the finest collection of seafaring oddities in the country (I include the clientèle), it's as close to the perfect pub in any large port I've seen.

Like the Marina Hotel half a mile dow the road, this was ALWAYS known as the 'Northern Bar', and had been since well before my father's time, too. Why the vogue for changing the names of what were icons in this city? Even the 'Athletic Arms' has now signage describing it as the 'Diggers', a far more common but incorrect name for the premises. Nobody actually CALLED it the Athletic Arms, but that's hardly the point, is it?

 Pets not welcome!
Having visited Kays for many years with and without a dog; I was recently asked to leave because my dog made a noise!!!! Said dog was being petted by STAFF and other patrons and being young is apt to yap and play when petted - to be asked by staff to leave because he made a noise after staff had been causing him to be playful rather begs belief... (it was an un-recognised barman, who seemed none too keen on having gay men in the pub.....)

My house overlooks Kays and I've always been tolerant of the odd noisey episode, but in future I will note and report every episode of antisocial behaviour to the relevant authorities.

A sad decline in a once grand local institution.

 most unwelcoming pub in Edinburgh
It is years since I've been here. I used to visit regularly after a game of snooker just down from this pub, but having heard/read the instances of folks being turned away or refused a drink for no good reason decided to include a visit on a bit of a pub crawl to check out these rumours.
Within seconds of ordering 3 drinks , my friends and I were asked to leave as there was a private party in progress, unter mince!!
We obviously just didn't fit in with the motley crew that were already tucked into their seats. It felt like we had stepped back in time ! Reminded me of going to the bingo in some miners club where if you sat in a seat that was old senga's you would get the 'glare' for the whole evening. Avoid this place like the plague

 Won't Be Back!
I was reminded of the old joke what do you find under a ponytail? Answer: A horse's ass. on a visit to Sandy Bell's yesterday. I've been in and out of this bar for nearly 40 years, but after yesterday, I won't be back. I ordered a pint of IPA and a wine, £5.50 handed over a £20 note and got £4.50 change. I immediately queried this and was treated like I was an idiot. I was accused of only handing over a £10 note, 'cos there's only one in the till an it wasn't there 5 minutes ago. The guy sitting next to me had just paid for his drink with a £10 note he later told me and the barmaid. Then I had to wait 10 minutes whist the barman checked the tills. After all that I was grudgingly handed 2 £5 notes with a mumbled, that's never happened before. All I can say is Nice Try Mate but pick on some less awake next time. I won't be back under your stewardship!

 A good find
Myself and my son visited this pub twice whilst we were on holiday in Edinburgh the last week of July this year. It is a lovely, old, traditional pub and the food was good and very reasonably priced and the staff were very friendly and attentive. I would definitely call in again, if the drinks were cheaper i would call frequently and give and extra point to rating.

 Really bad
Me and my girlfriend walked in last night to the Filling station on he royal mile wed 10th aug, we had to wait 15minutes for a table so had adrink in the bar, which was ok. We then got our table and decided to order the Full rack of ribs, when they arrived was 9 cut up small ribs in small bowl with half cooked small bowl of chips and 3 small tubs of sauce. I was disgusted with the 9 small ribs in the bowl that i asked to speak to the Manager on duty. I was told him that i was disgusted with the portion for £16 for the meal that was in front of me, which he agreed was terrible and said would discount the meal to half price and was having discussions withe the managers regarding the ribs. The meal was ruined with the whole ambience, we ate few of the ribs and asked for the bill and walked out. I would not recommend the Filling station for food ruined our night.

jackie day
not the best place to eat in edinburgh
arrived at the filling station at around 2pm today. as it was busy i asked how long we would have to wait on atable for 2. was told that there was a 5-10 min wait so myself and my son decided to wait. After we waited for 20mins my son went and asked how long we were still going to wait and was told that the buzzer to let us know when our table was ready had not been registered so we were actually never going to get a table. We were then given the next available table. We ordered our dirinks,a diet coke for myself and an irn-bru ice cream float for my son, after a wait the drinks arrived my diet coke and an irn bru for my son, this was returned as it is not what he ordered. We then ordered our food. an all day breakfast for him and a hot dog for myself. they arrived in ok time as the resteraunt was busy but the allday breakfast was missing the link sausage, we told this to our waitress who came back with a sausage on a seperate plate and left. after a short time the waitress came and asked if everything was ok, it wasnt the breakfast should have also had potate scones with it that were also missing, she then informed us that they had run out and only had hash browns and askd if he would like one, this is half way through our meal. Surley this should have been mentioned at time of ordering as he would have ordered something different. I would like to say that i have been the this place before and received good service but after today i would only return if i really had to and as there are plenty of great places to eat in edinburgh that dont cost as much it is highly unlikley that i will go back. still waiting on an apology

Even if the meal was good - the stuff was really terrible and the times - full card till 10 pm, open till 1 am arent real.

The only thing you get after 9pm is chips and you'll get kicked on the street an 12 pm at the latest

 Overrated, overpriced and poor quality
My partner and I popped into the filling station for lunch as the menu looked quite nice and the price was a bit over average so we figured it must be quality food.
We sat down at our table and our waitress introduced herself and continued to take our drink order, she then went on to ask if we would like to start with garlic bread with cheese to which I replied no thank you, she then proceeded to ask again if I was sure she couldn't temp me to order, this annoyed me slightly as I'd don't want to have to come into a restaurant and be
We wanted some comfort food so ordered chilli nachos and macaroni cheese with Chips and battered mushroom to share.
The macaroni dish was described on the menu as being creamy macaroni with cheese onto, out into the over till bubbling and when it arrived it looked very plain with hardly any 'creamy sauce' no cheese on top and there were actual pieces of pasta with no sauce on at all. The sauce that was there tasted like powered cheese and it was horrible.
The chilli nachos had about 2 tablespoons of chilli if you were lucky and this was basically all kindness beans and tasteless. There was big raw chunks of green chilli not jalapeños and there was only cheese covering 2 of the nachos!
The battered mushroom although nice were too greasy and when I took a bite the grease was everywhere!
We couldn't every eat the dishes and pushed the plates to the side, not once did the waitress come over and ask if everything was okay and when I asked for the bill she was silent and did not let on or ask how our meal was! I do not understand how this place can charge these prices and serve such poor quality food. I have made sure my review is on every single site as people do not have money to waste and there are so many nice places in Edinburgh that serve decent quality food for reasonable prices! I will never be back!
I also want to say that, this location will pull alot of tourists and the filling station should be ashamed of producing such poor quality! This is a an insult to Edinburgh!

I visited this bar a while back and was disgusted that my Jack Daniels & cole was only half full, when i asked if I could have a full glass which Im sure I paid for, I was asked for an extra pound. i visited again on the weekend forgetting my first experience & was dissapointed the problem still existed. the bar is great unfortunately the staff are somewhat judgmental or their customers & seem to take a liking to only those who have common interests or similar to themselves in their quirky personalaties....I would sugest to take a look at the bar then leave

 Policy and Manners
To be barred from a pub could be embarassing, but to be barred by someone who can barely speak English is a joke, especially when that person has low morals, fucks a prostitute and then some and passes judgement on others. Oh, and allegedly has a very small cock. Now, that's just rude.

nice food however female staff seemed much more interested in the males in there. had to wait about 15 minutes to be served a drink as barmaid was far to interested chatting to man at end of the bar! very rude! however except for her the other staff seemed to be very friendly, even got myself a phone number from a lovely young man!

 Why bother?
The only plus I can think of is the small beer garden at the rear. Otherwise the surly barman and indifferent service make it a place to avoid with so many other attractive options nearby.

Titel says it all. The daft bint who clearly made up two separate names to post on the same day, obviously has an issue with one of the barmaids. I have been there twice and the place is awesome. Bar staff are good, good environment, a proper pub. Not a bar, bar/club, pub/club which the city centre lacks. (I'm only 22 and I say that!) All in all, an awesome place. Definately going back again :)

 poor service
The staff in the restaurant unfriendly and unwelcoming. When I asked for a table, I was ordered to Wait 2 minutes While I appreciate the need to employ foreign staff, I expect at the very least courteous service. The food was deplorable and had to be sent back. I had a foreign visitor and he was not impressed. This usd to be a great restaurant. Customer Service is very important -the manager needs to get on top of this now!!

Very disappointing and expensive - £9.95 for a burger meal. Quality poor. Chips soggy and fatty. No salad (one slice of tomato and a few limp pieces of rocket). Tiny tub of coleslaw.Shabby. Edinburgh residents and tourists deserve better! On the Royal Mile too!

 Lovely pub, BAD staff
Went there for a quiet cappuccino and a bowl of chips today. I was told that they were only serving food upstairs. My goal to have a comfortable bite to eat was dashed when I entered the packed, and very loud (and very bright) eating area up top.

Can I help you? the waitress said, with a notable tone of confusion and a little bit of annoyance. As if someone standing by the 'please wait here to be seated' sign was the most uncommon and unnatural thing to happen in that part of the pub.

I spoke plain, clear-as-day, proper, well-spoken English to the old waitress. She didn't understand a word (not the first time I have had this problem with this woman), which just made ME look like an idiot. I left, returning to the ground floor.

When I got back to the bar I just ordered a cappuccino and retired to a dark corner to read, starving.

ONLY serving food upstairs is a bad idea. But the fact that the barman had an attitude about fetching me more sugar for my coffee kinda soured the experience further. It took him 15 seconds, but he acted like I was sending him out to a minefield.

The staff in this place need to get their act sorted out. It would be such a lovely place if they all raised their IQs a little or just stopped being snobs. Oh...and fire that old waitress!!!
Friday, May 20, 2011Rating: rosettes

I liked Bar Alba but now the Fiddlers Rest is terrible! We waited forty minutes for oven fish and chips, the sachets of salad crem were off and the waitress went to the local Sainsburys to buy lettuce for our meal!
Not what I expect from the capital and not a good show for the tourists.

 Awful management!! Rubish food
I visited this pub on a hen weekend to Edinburgh and I have never experienced service like it! The pub was empty and the bar man made no effort to hid his hangover joking with us not to make too much noise as his head was burstin. When ordering our drinks the bar man was reluctant to go down to the store room for the angus dourie bitter required for some long vodkas and asked if we could changed our order!! We then ordered food all on the 1 order and everything arrived over 30mins later and at different times either burnt or under cooked, some did not arrive at all! When we asked for the manager the scruffy hangover bar man arrived and was rude and at no point offered an apology. He said they where understaffed even though we where the only 12 people in the bar! He then went into hiding leaving a young girl to deal with our complaint and refused at first to offer refunds for the food that was burnt! The girl eventually gave us the refund while the manger remained in hiding! A simple apology would have sorted this issue but instead I will never be entering any of the Edward chains and I strongly recommend you stay clear of the Edinburgh branch!

The worst night club I have ever been in. It was Filthy, Musty, Rough, Not a nice place to visit. The carpets were sticky with broken glass everywhere. The security had stations above themselves and by their behaviour they clearly shared the same brain cell. Thy were very heavy handed with the customers. Not a good image representing our capital city. Dont waste your money.

Great pub in the center of town, with one of the finest selections of whiskies, ales and bottled beers. Can be quiet which is great if you need an escape, and can fill up quickly at night when you meet loads of interestng people. As for comments about the staff, i find them very helpful and friendly. i have witnessd them refuse service (rightly so), but they are proper bar staff that don't take crap, i was impressed how patient the young man was with the insults he got for doing his job on my last visit

I was recently in this pub over the weekend, and have to say it was one of the most unpleasant places in edinburgh. Check your beer before your drink it, i had one pint here and got horribly ill from it. They serve beer here that has gone off! Not to mention the unenthusiastic caveman like service i recieved. I hope that you never get the chance to go to this pub as it is one of the worst ones in the city of Edinburgh.

I don't know what has happened t this little gem recently. The bar staff are quite the rudest people I've had the misfortune to meet. It's not like they have a monopoly in that part of town!

Pivo Edinburgh Worst Bar In Edinburgh
Don't believe the promotional hype reviews by the owners. This is the worst pub in Edinburgh by far, some very unfriendly bar staff and all unfriendly clientele. Known to the locals as a dive. Czech themed in a stereotypical way with misspelled Czech murals. Highly attractive to foreigners who don't know any better unless you are Polish or part of some other ethnic clique you will be made to feel unwelcome. You will never see the same people in here twice this is what the bar lives on - a steady stream of foreign transients and unsuspecting tourists. It is nobody's local for a very good reason and the food = crisps. Avoid at all costs.

 Horrible treatment from 'Manageress'
We went into this pub and asked the lady behind the bar what beers she had- she listed off a very impressive amount of beers so unknowingly we said 'but what about on draft?' and she said 'THAT IS DRAFT' in the rudest tone. So we ordered a Stella and she gave it to my husband. I then asked if she had red wine and she said yes I asked whether they were small bottles or big ones and found out that they had large ones only so being a very frequent wine drinker i asked if they had been opened long as wine tends to go off if it is left open for a day or so, She said 'WINE DOES NOT GO OFF AND HOW WOULD I KNOW HOW OLD THEY ARE SINCE I JUST GOT HERE AN HOUR AGO!' I said well can I try one - She said NO! WE DONT DO SAMPLES' I asked if I bought some wine and it had turned could i get it changed and she said NO! So I just said ok I will take a glass of Rioja thanks. SHE THEN PROCEEDED TO SNAP THE GLASS OF BEER OFF MY HUSBAND AND TELL US THAT WE HAD A PROBLEM AND THAT WE NEEDED TO LEAVE! I COULDNT BELIEVE IT. SHE CAME AROUND THE BAR AND STARTED TO PUSH MY HUSBAND OUT OF THE PUB - PHYSICALLY - HE WAS NOT HAPPY THAT SHE WAS TOUCHING HIM SO HE SAID SO - SHE PUSHED US TOWARDS THE DOOR AND TOLD US TO GET OUT. We asked to speak to the manager and she said she was the manager(not sure if I believe that) She would not tell us her name either!! I have never been so disprepected in my life. We had come to Edinburgh for the Rugby International between Scotland and Ireland and had been having a great time exploring Edinburgh. This totally put a dampner on our holiday and I am going to write to the company personally. I would NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE !

 Don't Ask for Wine!!!!
Food Good as Pub Grub goes BUT oh dear what a miserable wine selection. Of those listed only the cheapest 2 were available and having choosen 1 it was rank! Having complained, no-one appeared to answer our complaint but we were charged for the privilage! Our mistake was to have poured 3 Glasses because we stupidly thought this place wouldn't sell el cheopo vino at vastly marked up prices!! The only saving grace was that my mother had a bottle of M&S wine in the car (£8.00) which our poor waitress agreed that we could drink. It is amazing that a pub that promotes itself in the way that it does didn't have the advertised wine in stock and of what was available couldn't supply a fresh bottle. The waitress on duty was completely harassed and was coping under difficult circumstances but service was so slow that we abandoned any thoughts of coffees and follow-up drinks. This pub is clearly trading on its name and doesn't care a hoot because they know people will keep on coming due to its location and history!

4 of us had lunch today in your pub and the food was poor and so was the service. The bar was unattended and we waited some time to be served both at the bar and the table. 3 of us ate salmon with noodles and it was very dry and tastless.  What a rip off!!
I was at Tanners on Saturday for my brother's Engagement meal and have to say it was the worst dining experience I've ever had. The manager wanted my brother to pay for the people who didn't turn up - I could understand if he'd had to turn away customers but we were the only diners in the restaurant! He then told us it was an extra £4 if you wanted a RIBEYE steak - even though it didn't say this on the menu. I know there's a recession on, but this is not the correct way to win customers. We will never dine there again - disgraceful!

Like a plastic surgery-enhanced famous actress, this one's appealing from the outside, but that's exactly where you should leave it The clientele becomes severely annoying after 10 minutes or so, so make sure you have no sharp implements to hand.

I am coming to the conclusion that there is an evil scientist at work in this city. Well kept ales, a good selection of wines and spirits in a lovely setting, a pub of great character. Mesmerized by it’s charm I was almost forced to put on my artist hat, erect my easel and open up my paint box. If i could lift this pub up and place it at the bottom of my road – then it would become my dream local!

 Stunning Bar
Recommended for families, especially on a saturday night. The atmosphere is so ambient, the staff incredibly warm and welcoming. The kind of pub where they remember your name even after just a couple of visits. A mixed clientelle old and young who cant be faulted in any way adds to the joy and pleasure of a visit. Also situated in one of the best streets in Edinburgh, the cowgate, a hidden gem in the old town. Take a late night romantic stroll after and enloy the outstanding architecture of the street after you've had one of the finest dining experiences Edinburgh can offer, the chef uses the freshest of Scottish ingredients, this really should have a michelin star. It even offers some rooms for a weekend away, you would think you where in the finest hotels in Paris or London. Cant recommend this place enough, incredibly good value for money, i dont know how they do it, it must be the pride the staff have in working there

 A lovely experience
I find the predominance of 5-star and 1/0-star ratings interesting, although perhaps they represent those willing to spend the time making comments. As a single female from abroad, I had a lovely experience. I enjoyed the eclectic atmosphere and the ability to choose among many different venues, finding a quiet corner and a tasty meal (if rather expensive for an open-faced sandwich and salad) that exactly suited my mood. The manager and waitstaff/bartenders were helpful and friendly without constantly checking on my state of mind. I would visit again on another trip to Edinburgh and recommend it heartily to friends and family.

 changing times
I went into the western bar and was surprised to see that the dancers by far outnumbered the men! It is no wonder so many girls have left. I decided to get a dance from Sadie for the first time, she is the best dancer ever and doesnt know how sexy she is! Also got a dance from Sandra, after all these years I still don't get bored!

I was extemely lucky to find this pub early in my 3 years of working in Scotland. It is my favorite pub with excellent pints, drams, and food. The staff made me feel welcome and at home from the start of my early visits to Edinburgh. Just wonderful folks and atmosphere.

I have now been into the Cramond Brig many many times as i live locally. I can confidently say that the management team are 10000000% better than before. Having spoken to both Ewan and Tasha everytime we have visited, I can clearly see that they are passionate about turning this business around. The warm welcome they both extend to all their customers at all times, is second to none. I always feel like a returning friend as opposed to a paying customer, which in my opinion is the best, if not the only, way to be. They have obviously hand picked the existing team members as it is plain for all to see that not only do they work well together to provide superior service, they seem to all be genuinely close, which in turn creates the family atmosphere that my family and I continue to return to the Brig for. I cannot praise the two of them enough and I truly hope that the new owners realise how much the local community appreciate how they have rebuilt the restaurants reputation and regained our trust. Thank you Ewan and Tasha, YOU'RE THE BEST! see you very soon!!! Susan

 Middle-aged men refused service
I’m holidaying in the UK from Australia and was refused service by the unfriendly Manager because my 34 year old Asian friend was not carrying any identification. We have visited pubs all over the UK and this is the only place that has been a problem. I wonder why. My complaint was brushed aside. They refused to tell me the last time they’d asked a 34 year old Caucasian for his identification. The company said “Under the current laws the person responsible for running any bar is permitted to refuse service for any number of reasons ... a reason does not have to be given.” Left a very sour taste in our mouths and spoiled our visit to Edinburgh.

 whisky drinking
If you want to have ice in a malt whisky go to a diferent bar....

You ignorant prat! I've been drinking whisky for 45 years and I always put a bit of water - sometimes ice - in it. What the hell's that got to do with anyone else? The barmaid should have been sacked on the spot.

Your cretinous attitude - that there's only one way to drink malt - annoys me big time and the sooner that attitude's drummed out of Scotland the better.

PS How would you like if a restaurant told you not to put milk in tea or coffee?

I found the Irish barman to be very pleasant and witty, and also very entertaining - as he got up and sang a few throaty tunes with the performer of the night, Steve Lee. Maybe the previous blogger should release the wild bee from his bonnet and relax. The WHI provides a fantastic and tranquil environment to my friends and I every time we visit.

 Visit to Scotland
I visited the pub while I was in Edinburgh for the British open. We stayed near there, and found this place walking back from Waverly station. We went there once every night. I loved the atmosphere, and the service was fantastic. I especially thought Sarah was fantastic. I am a big fan of her. However, the estabishment is fantastic, and I wish Washington DC would get a place like that. I will be back, and will let everyone know about this place.

 Afternoon's entertainment
Spent an afternoon in the bar a couple of weeks ago, while on business. Loved the place, the girls. My choice of place for a beer!
Spent most of the afternoon with Sophie. I now wish i'd got more dances from her. She just never asks, but when we did it was so worth it! Amazing
I'm back next week, hope she's on!!!

fantastic little pub, great food and service
Love coming here often for a bite to eat. Surprisingly large inside, it has been recently been taken over by new management who have much improved the site.
Good atmosphere- busy, but not so much so that its uncomfortable or too loud. Staff are very friendly and attentive.
The menu offers a range of inventive gourmet burgers (i love the chilli burger- which comes with jalapenos, chili cheese, sour cream and a rich spicy sauce), as well as salads and sides. The burgers are generous in size and presented nicely, on wooden boards with a pot of coleslaw and string fries. Deserts are lovely too- try the toffee sundae...if you any room left!!
Fantastic range of drinks, including many beer choices and cocktails for under a fiver. Wine is jokely listed under cheap, good and great - meaning there is various price ranges. The beer and burger deal for under a tenner should not be missed!h
Would definitely recommend a visit :)h

 Traditonal Old pub
A hidden gem! In the heart of historic Edinburgh and beside The Old College University quadrant. We came across this by accident but the lady behind the bar was very friendly. The pub was recently re-opened and has traditional folk music in the evenings. A young girl came in and played violin on the afternoon that we were there. She seemed to have a few friends sitting with her and it was a wonderful atmosphere if a little quiet.

Good Food, Good Beer, Bad Service
The food is amazing, the beer is superb. However, I arrived at 11 am one time with my girlfriend, and the watress informed us that it had opened at 10:30. We asked to be served, and she treated us like we were a nuisance, and that she did not want us there. We were the first ones, but we did not feel like we deserved such open contempt. Ultimately a bar is a service industry. Although the resaurant is providing great food and great beer, the staff can ultimately take away from the experience and scare customers away.

 Never going back here!
Bafflingly rude service here last night.

At closing time, the bar manager took it upon herself to physically pull drinks out of people's hands, spilling wine everywhere. The bar staff kept serving drinks which the manager then proceed to take away from people minutes later, as she cleared the pub.

Add to that the prices, (charged £4.80 for a gin & tonic), I shan't be going back.

 What a place
Just thought I'd better give credit to possibly the best pub I've been to in a while.

I normally drink at Luckies and have done foe many years, started getting bored and fancied a change of scenery.

Tried all the pubs on the way to The Polwarth Tavern but have to say it was the one I was impressed by most.

Now I make the 30 min walk at least 3/4 times a week

The 2 guys that have taken over from the old days are great behind the bar and with all theat they offer this is definately worth a look.

 Good Choice
It's only one and a half hours journey by train from Newcastle to Edinburgh and on our many visits our plans usually include a visit to this pub. We enjoy the good choice of real ales provided and the variety of food available. Lest I forget...........the prices of both are great.

yes, cheapest pint cost you 3 sterling pound here.

 another awful pub
A pint of cheapest lager, Foster's in this case, cost you 2 pounds. And the fat ageing Goth bartender gives you a bad pint well short of 400ml, and when you ask to to fill it up, he would take an offence, AVOID like a plague. I am telling you for your sake, from the bottom from my heart! They are Mr Hyde not the Jekylle. Avoid!!!! there are lots of decent pubs in edinburgh, not this one.

 Different if not strange
There were all sorts of curios and pictures hanging off the walls and ceilings. The food was very nice but the main course was a choice of about 100 Scandinavian-style open sandwiches; so if you want meat and three veg then you’d be deeply disappointed. You could have a side-salad of a baked potato! The desserts were different presentations of ice-creams. So all the cooking is done hours before you arrive -it's just a matter of constructing it on a plate. I chose surf and turf which was a few thin slices of fillet, a king prawn and a bit of a langoustine on a slice of dark bread. Smart casual dress, no cameras, no credit cards but helpfully they have installed a cash machine and charge you £2 for the privilege of getting money out to pay them – even though there is a cashpoint directly across the road. You can only go in one door and out of another. You write down your order on a chit – put the reference number rather than a waiter taking it. Generally, you get the feeling that you are there on their terms you are meant to be grateful. There are plenty of other places I'd rather spend my time and money.

A very unique pub - it grows on you
I know this place from the 1970s. It has been in the Watson-Kerr family for nearly 80 years.
It is quaint, full of it's unique character, is part of Edinburgh's history and although it may not attract the youth looking for rock and pop, it has a regular clientele that are mature, safe and private.
It grows on you and it's unique way of your writing your own order for food and drink in the restaurant is itself something to savour.
The menu in the winter could do with a few more hot dishes but otherwise is excellent.
The list of malt whiskies is also unique and extensive.
It is family run, antiquarian in character and keeps to strict rules.
If you do not like order and good behaviour while in pubs maybe you should stay away but otherwise feel absolutely safe to enter the place and come back again and again

On an extended Volcanic Ash trip my son and I left London to visit family in Edinburgh. After seeing some fantastic pubs in London and Canterbury I have to say that Canny Mans rates at the top. Our cousin, who is a regular at the place recommended some of his favorite foods, all of them were well presented and delicious. The service was great! Outstanding, classy and classic all apply to this gem. Anyone would be lucky to have this pub in their town!

Colin are you mad?
The Tap was one of THE best places in Stockbridge to go for a nice lunch/dinner. Maybe the food being served before was spoiling us a bit too much, but I know I will never eat there again. The food I was served a week ago was god awful in comparison to what it was before. Unseasoned, ugly, bland and most importantly BORING. Still a lovely place to drink, and the staff as always are fantastic, but if you're wanting something nice for your tea, head to Bells or the Blue Parrot!

 Good Pub Spoiled By Manager
We were visiting Edinburgh for the long Easter weekend. This was near to our B&B. Not a bad choice of beers some cask ones (A new thing according to the very welcoming locals) The choice on the juke box was huge and the locals have great and varied taste in music. Get in early if you want to hear your choices! As the last couple of reviewers said the bald manager is a bit of a sourpuss. Somebody should give him a second facial expression for his birthday. Difficult to tell if he is actually that pissed off as you can't understand a word. In conclusion good pub terrific and very friendly locals What a pity the skin head manager brings the whole atmos down with his scowling. (Lost 2 stars for that)

Not Any More Venturing Into This Bar
I Have frequented this bar on and off for yrs after coming over the short distance from Dalkeith
now residing in Edinburgh i have normally always called in as
i have found it to be a pleasant bar with pleasant clientele and bar staff

However one barman with long greasy hair and with an irish accent certainly has changed my point of view and the view of my friends from Edinburgh

as this man or boy should be aptly named has certainly not got a way with him in manners
in regards serving fellow customers
yes it gets busy at nights especially at wkends but this barman has been seen to be agressive in his manner towards people and has not got a way about him towards customers
and actually i think he has something against Scottish people in general and should not be allowed to work behind any bar
as he is very abrupt and agressive in his manner..certainly he has a twisted personality

I and all my friends wont go back to this bar only because of what we have witnessed with this man behind the bar

The others all were and have always been no problems and get on with their jobs and ok at it
but this bloke as mentioned from Ireland has no way about him for working at this type of work whatsoever

And the manager of this bar really if he doesnt want anymore customers to dissapear from venturing into his bar then he'd
be wise to get rid of this
very abrupt bloke before others follow out the door

Ive personally told my friends both male/female whom frequent this bar as i did
and they also are not going back
until this guy has been sent packing.

Have been here a few times now, both as old and as new, and I must say that there is no comparison. The new is definately better. Have always been with Evonne Winters coach party, and now it is so friendly, so when I was in Edinburgh looking for a meal after visiting the afternoon performance at the Playhouse, I looked no further than the Crammond Brig.
Prompt, friendly service. Ok, we were in and out within the hour and we only had a main course, but what a main course, any chance I can get the recipie please chef for the butternut squash?
Thanks again and next time I'm in Edinburgh looking for a meal before the drive home, then I know where to stop!

Not quite the story i heard about the previous chef but in any case a new team has taken over the kitchen and the food is as good if not better. Staff are knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming. Probably the best pub in stockbridge for a pint of cask ale.

 room for improvement
I have been going to the Barony Bar for over 20 years and have always been fond of it's relaxed atmosphere and excellent beers. Unfortunately on my last visit I encountered arguably the worst service I have ever experienced in a pub. The rude, unsmiling barmaid appeared to consider such basic activities as saying please and thank-you and clearing away glasses as beneath her station. Upon leaving my friend returned our glasses to the bar and said thank you only to be greeted with stony silence. A busy weekend you might think for the harassed barmaid. Not at all, a quiet monday evening with about half a dozen punters. It will be a long time before any of us are back.

 Very polite, but not friendly
We visited for a bar meal, which we had in the main whisky bar. It was on the pricey side. However, the surroundings - especially the whisky display - are awesome. Service is extremely polite and professional (even a white tablecloth and white cloth serviettes). But staff are a little 'distant' and could be more welcoming. I asked about buying a bottle of The Golden Drop (the pub's own blend). Despite there being dozens of bottles behind the bar and others having bought previously, they wouldn't sell me one - strange, given that it is a business and I had cash in hand.

A plate of goose that laid the golden egg anyone?
the kitchen at the Tap went from pies to excellent meals. But you're too late for that now folks. The Stockbridge Tap kitchen has closed as a result of the parent company wanting to double the chef's rent. A plate of goose that laid the golden egg anyone?

avoid, has gone downhill a lot
I used to like this place a few years ago but things have changed a lot .. expect to be hassled by the girls the moment you step through the door, also very expensive drinks now, bouncers have become rude and arrogant.
Tuesday, February 9, 2010Rating: rosettes

I visited dropkicks last week for the first time, and i will never ever be back. How this can be one of the best bars in Edinburgh is beyond me, the place was disgusting! I was met in the door by two rude security guards, then was hit by the overpowering smell of hundreds of sweaty drunks - not the most appealing thing in the world let me assure you. After ten minutes of trying to work my way through a huge scrum of shouting, jumping and in one case - fighting customers, I only just saw the bar and was met by the sight of two stressed barstaff, giving horrific service, some of the worst pints ive ever seen! So i left, and will never go back! People listen! There are much better places to go than this dive!

a good pub if you do not play fruit machines
I went there last night with a mate, played a fruit machine situated at door beside bar and went to toilet after losing 25 odd quid (big deal it happens) and after coming back my mate informed me a uniformed staff member named Cameron rushed up to it from behind the bar as soon as i had walked away proceeded to play it in between working and serving customers.
i took exception to this considering it's a bit off colour to see a staff member blatantly scam the machines/customers like that as soon as a customers back is turned and asked him if he was working which he denied though it was obvious he was and was wearing uniform, going back and forth behind bar serving food etc,
i just saw this as scamming behaviour and stated it so to him which he arrogantly chuckled at and 5 mins later when i tried to buy another drink and was told i would'nt be served by a staff member cos Cameron said so and after going up to him to find out what the actual problem was i was bemused to be told i was barred (for no stated reason) and to get out
so it's a fine pub as long as you do not question certain staff members if they are obviously scamming customers playing cash game machines and abusing positions of authority by issuing bans when a customer enquires what they are playing at as they simply throw you out whilst laughing arrogantly, it was a very chavvish way to behave and i expected better from a place that normally has a happy atmosphere most times but it has evidently gone slightly downhill recently.

Best bar in Edinburgh the atmosphere ,the beer, the girls - all great. Megan is drop dead gorgeous and I had the most wonderful dance from her. Of course I had dances from the other girls too - I was like a wean in a sweet shop ! I took a pal through from Glasgow to see the place and he had a fantastic day. Had a quick look in the other place across the road and made a swift exit after being immediately hassled by a large hound before we could even get a sip of our beers.

 Grumpy manager
Was out with a few pals and went to the bar and ordered a round for everyone. after the manager had poured a couple of drink a friend came up and said he wanted a coke mixer instead of a lemonade one. As she hadn't made this drink I didn't see the problem and asked if she could make this change. her reaction was to look at me asif i'd poured the drink over her head and said do you want to make up you mind in a aggresive tone. To which I replied im sorry but i dont like your tone.........if your not happy with my tone you and friends can leave!. Which is what we all did leaving 5 poured drinks which she had poured at the bar. Leaving for a gret night with no managers on a power trip coz they have a walkie talkie strapped to her 40 inch waist.

Well i got attacked in rush from 5 teenage girls for no reason, apart from the fact that i was apparently looking at them funny! The door steward kindly man handled me and threw me out into the street, being a 26 year old professional woman i have never been put out a bar in my life, in the process my £300 designer watch and my £500 Gucci bag got stolen along with all my money and credit cards and not one member of staff offered me help or called the police. Apparently all people who are 'involved' in a fight get removed from the premises, me being one of them!? much to my partners delight he had to come and collect me from town to take me home to clean up my burst lip and bloody nose. Not a bar i would recommend in a hurry.

 Wonderful Meal
We ventured back to the Cramond Brig after some friends had told us the new owners had transformed the place. We were not dissapointed; great new decor, friendly staff and an excellent menu. I had the pork belly which was yummy, and my wife really enjoyed the heb crusted Salmon. They also have a great new wine list - the Vina Real Rioja was perfect with the Pork! We'll be back very soon as we really couldn't fault it and it was great value too.

 Awesome pub
Visited the UK in November 2007. Must have visited 30 pubs over the course of 10 days, some of which are famous. Without a doubt, the Scotsmans' Lounge is the one I remember the best. We were heading back to the hotel after a day of sightseeing, but as soon as we heard the music coming out of this place, we had to stop for a drink (turned into many). What we found was an incredible little pub with great music, great drink, a party-filled atmosphere and friendly staff. That one drink turned into many. Wish we had places like this in Canada.

 Needs Improvement
Went in for Breakfast, it was the worst I have ever had in Edinburgh. The staff were very unfriendly and seemed put out that we were there, they were not busy as my guests and I were the only ones in! Also didn't appreciate having to listen to the bar staff discuss their social life at a high volume! The breakfast was actually so bad I felt ill for the rest of the day. Half of it was cold and none of us ate it, after a few bites we decided to leave it! Didn't say anything to the staff on duty as we knew that they wouldn't have cared at all! Very dissapointing and we will never return!

This is the best pub in the world MATE
Before our good mate Brian (Edinburgh local) took us to this pub he told us it was the best pub in Edinburgh by the time we were where leaving after our 3 days stay we told him he was wrong and said This is the best pub in the world MATE. At first we taught we'd just have one but we where soon lured in by the magical atmosphere within. Our first night here there was a great duo of a fiddler and a guitarist. They played traditional Irish and Scottish music and all my mates sang along, what a pub mate. The drink was so cheap but the ice cubes must have been expensive because they where very tight when it came to giving them out! :) We all left the pub well oiled that night for little or no money! The next day we went to another pub but no1 could settle because we where all very excited of going back to The Scotmans Lounge we had heard that there was a different band on this night and that they where brillant. When we got back to it we cud hardly get in the door but everyone inside squeezed in as they always do in this pub to accomodate people. Great pub mate When we got inside we where not let down by the band, there was a wee scottish man but he was no ordinary scottish man he was a chinese scottish man! Probably one of the most talented Chinese Scottish men I have ever seen. His partner played some sort of a music instrument but I don't no the name of it, it was like a bag or sack with pipes coming out of it and was very loud. My friend Enda liked the band so much he recorded them on his camera phone and we have watched them every day since. Another magical night was had by us all in this hidden gem and again we left with plenty of money and a deep since of belonging and love for what we now describe as The Best Pub In The World. We meet many of the regulars and the staff were very nice. The one down side I have of this pub and I am clutching at straws here is perhaps the toilets could be closer to the band or maybe equiped with speakers so you won'tt have to miss hearing the band. On our last day we went back for one last drink and a few snaps and we joked with the barman that we would be interested in opening up The Scotmans Lounge in our own home town and had he ever taught of franchising it out! I don't think he took us serious but you never know.I am already planning my next trip back to what we now call The Greatest Pub in the World Mate

 good food but abysmal service
After frequent visits ( more than they deserve) to this pub I now feel the need to write about the terrible service in this establishment. Although the food ordered was of decent quality and value, this was overshadowed by dirty tables, unclean surroundings ( some sort of moulding fruit on the radiator!) and terrible service from both the waitress and bar staff. A little manners go a long way. Unfortuantely it appears everytime I've been in here, regardless of who is working, the bar staff are very rude.. including what I assume was the manager.. leading by example I see!

My Favorite Pub in all of Scotland
I found this tiny Pub 2 years ago on holiday in Scotland. I returned several times to take John's guided malt tours and learn from his expertise. The food is exceptional and almost magically appears from a kitchen no larger than a broom closet. I am going back next week (June 2009) I am excited to see John and Christine and learn more of the history of Scotch as only John can relate it through illustrated examples.

 Warning to all bands!!!
The Grosvenor has got to be one of the most unreliable venues we have ever been booked for! The mangers Michael and James had booked us for a gig and decided because it was quiet we weren,t needed. This was after we had turened up with all our equipment to play, which they did not refund us for!! Also these managers were so cowardly and dishonest they decide to hide in their offices for half an hour before they came to speak to us! They then decided to lie to our face and say their bookings were done by an agent but James told me to take bookings from Michael and we negotiated dates and prices right there and then, because they were also to tight to pay our band the asking price. I strongly recommend all musicians not to go near this venue as they will just mess them about. No honour amoungst theives eh!!!!!!!!

Remember being grabbed by the bouncers in there in 2002, dragged out, thrown to the ground, needind 10 stitches in my head, and all for? I still have no idea to this day!!!

This happened pretty soon after a punter died through the negligence of the animal bouncers.

Don't know if it's any better now, I do hope so, the door staff were bang out of order.

The most unfriendly unwelcoming venue I have ever come across in Edinburgh.
Staff as always seem to reflect the management's disdain for the customers.
The extensive list of things diners/drinkers must not do which greets you on the entrance to the place, should be a warning as to the attitude.
It became incidental that the food was not particularly good either.

 Very attractive place
I liked a lot the interior decoration. And the staff was very kind with me (a poor French girl who lost her wallet). I really recommand this pub.
Tuesday, April 14, 2009Rating: rosettes

Easily the best pub in Edinburgh, and possibly the known universe. Don't walk in there with your camera slung round your neck when there is a sign outside which clearly states 'no cameras' or you're asking for it! Fantastic selection of whiskies and ales, and, considering most pubs these days make do with a couple of bottles of new world piss behind the bar, a great selection of wines and champagne. A veritable Aladdin's cave. And, contrary to some of the reviews I've read on here, the staff are perfectly polite and hospitable in my experience, unless you're a 50 something, sandals and socks wearing, tight arse bitter drinker, in which case you don't deserve it anyway.

 Great Pub
Sheep Heid is a brill old pub (real old - not plastic olde)

loads of interesting historical things cover the walls an nooks...

the ale and food is good...

and the Skittle Alley is amazing...

there is no where like this place - if I lived nearby I'd be there every day.

Checked out the Hopetoun for myself and was pleasantly surprised. Cask ale at last ( and in good nic!). The food and service are loads better than last year.

Music mostly good - but that's just my preference (hate juke boxes)

A great pub to go to for that authentic Scottish feel, great food and drink although a wee bit pricey and although the staff are generally very nice I found the owner to be quite rude.

Funny how both the last 2 comments (1positive and 1 negative) bear little or no relation to what actually did happen the day the americans were there. There wasn't a sandwich in sight!

I was also in the the day the Americans got ejected. They never looked under 21 didnt look like neds but fair enough they were finishing their sandwiches when they entered. (but thats probably because the food in there takes ages to be served)

 A new lease of life
Around Nov 2008, the old landlord/manager left/was replaced, by a younger forward thinking management. A new range of beers, with reduction in prices and proper waiter service and a new menu. Real bar-flys mix with tourists. A proper pub.

i was on a hen night on Sunday 4th January and our group ended up in this pub. It was a great night, great music playing however at the end of the night one particular bar staff managed to ruin the whole night. We were just putting on our coats to leave and a staff member (refused to give his name, fat brown curly hair) came over to us as we were leaving and shouted at all of us just to fuck out of the pub and said this in a very nasty manner. We said to him that we were just leaving and again he repeated the same and was very aggressive towards everyone who had been in great form. i felt that i could not leave the matter as he had been so rude and asked to speak to the manager who came over to us, again refused to give us his name. This manager refused to believe what we told him about his staff and stated to leav. At this point the ignorant barman started to make faces at us and laughed and then the man that stated that he was a the manager, really was not the manager and refused to get the manager for us. We had a great night out but unfortunately the staff ruined the night for us by the way it ended. The music was good but due to the staffs attitude would never return to this pub again.

 Very unfriendly.
As a photographer, I dropped by for a beer. I had my camera around my neck, backpack on my shoulder. I barely reached the bad before the bar-tender shouted No cameras in this pub. Totally out of order.
They have a rather obvious dislike to anything modern as they have a sign up saying No smoking, No credit cards, No mobile phones, No cameras and No backpackers. With the obvious dislike for my type I took myself and my money elsewhere.

I shall certainly never return to them again.

 Don't go there
We went to Deacon Brodies on the 26 October 2008, I had the Steak Pie with Roast pots and veg. Disgusting mess, the pie looked like it had been kept warm for too long, and the pastry (if you could call it that) was black and had dried up edges, when first delivered I thought it was just gravy which was making it look dark 'til I looked closer, the 'steak' very little and one piece was just fact, the pots were nice (surprisingly) but the vegetables were overcooked. We tried to call a waitress over but they were too busy, and no one came to us to ask if everything was OK, until when the plates needed collecting, then when I told her it was unsatisfactory, she just reported it to the management, no apology, nothing at all, end of .... Altogether it was an apalling meal.

 Good Pub
I saw the american group being kicked out- it was well deserved. They took up one of the largest tables for at least 20 minutes without a single drinks order, and proceeded to eat their own food in front of the bar staff.

Treat a place with respect, and you will be respected back.

Cloisters is a good quiet pub, serving a wide variety of quality ales and whiskys.

 Surprise Visit
My wife and myself was on tour from South Africa on the 22nd August 2008. We walked the streets of the old town and at lunch time we entered your tavern. We got the surprise of our lives at the beauty of the tavern. The service was good, the food was good and then it started to rain outside and within minutes the tavern was pack and everyone was chatting away, from spanish to us speaking in Afrikaans our home language. The manager/owner was running around serving the clients. Hey man was it one of the coolest pub we visited. Long live Deacon Brodie.

Despite a couple of bad reviews above, a one time bad experience does not a bad pub make. Forget the toilets, which are small and in need of decoration, this place is the definition of class. Great food, in both restaurant and bar. the slight rise in price (hardly double) is worth the extra level of service and the amazing selection of dishes. Maybe the menu isn't large, but it is clever. I visit this pub regularly and i have never had a bad meal or bad service. Plus the breakfasts are amazing.

 Poor service
I went in after shopping in Edinburgh on Saturday. The barman was downright rude and I walked out without staying to taste the beer. Additionally I find that the GA isn't what it once was (a great pub). The toilets are less than clean and the whole pub smells of stale ale. It's gone from one of my most favourite pubs to my most disliked. I'd choose the Cafe Royal any day.

 Bright, friendly, excellent beers
This is easily the nicest pub in Leith, and is my personal favourite in Edinburgh. The staff are lovely, the atmosphere is friendly, the bar is bright and the seating (with its deep leather-clad window ledges/seats) is superb.
The range of beers available quite impressive and well priced. Weihenstephan!

But, most importantly, the customers are lovely too, and there are no junkies or scum to be found inside! This may sound snobby and elitest, but if you know leith-walk then you know what I mean.....
This pub USED TO BE absolutley hideous before it was taken under new ownership a couple of years ago. That is why the Canadian review was so bad. Its a lovely place to be now.

great game of darts available here against one of the top players in edinburgh, 'Mutsie'. Turn up any night of the week and your guarenteed a game 'for a quid'. Witness a '180' from the great Mutter on regular occasions. Chat from the 'Religious' disciples at the holy corner is world renowned, entry into this private area is invitation only. Great service awaits you in this corner of the bar, with a select few gaining acceptance within the 'nickname' squad. Quality night, great cider, with glasses overflowing with regular top-ups of spring water ice cubes. Topper.

 Credit where credit is due
I like this pub a lot and would recommend it for a great choice of beers and generally a nice atmosphere.

Its location means that there is usually a mix of locals and tourists. There are doormen present, at least on Fri/sat night which is the only time I have been. This at least means that the clientele is reasonably well behaved!
Wednesday, July 16, 2008Rating: rosettes

 slow service
Although to be fair it is invariably Fri or Sat night when I am there so it is very busy. That said they do not seem able to adjust their staffing to cope, and the time taken to be served can sometimes be ridiculous. If live music is on then conversation is shouting only, in all areas of the bar, and coupled with the actually music the whole night can be a bit of an assault on the senses.
Good choice of ales if that is important to you. Some of the (female) bar staff need to remember what they are actually there to do and act like they are professionals. Too many times i have been made to feel that I should be lucky just to be getting sreved by them. No warmth, chat or smile. Maybe you have to be a regular local before you get that sort of treatment in this bar!
Wednesday, July 16, 2008Rating: rosettes

 Luck of the draw...
There really is nothing worse than a pub bore, be they staff or customer, offering unsolicited advice on what you should and shouldn't do with your drink (i.e. ice in whisky). In my experience of this bar you will generally not be hassled in this manner. However, you cannot legislate for every customer/regular and if it happens to you I would just try to ignore it and not allow it to spoil your enjoyment of this otherwise pleasant bar.
Re. the toilets. I am afraid they are not always in good nick and , although it is not an excuse, the same could be said for almost all of the other bars round and about. It is probably fair to say that the time of your visit may influence all of the above; it must be a tricky business to meet all of the demands of a very busy bar on a Fri/Sat night, versus 3pm on a wet Wednesday...

I wholeheartedly agree with Mr McDonald, the place is actually disgusting and it attracted so many undesireables it's unreal. The last time I was in there, I was attacked by pit bull terrier and the staff just laughed. The dog and staff should have both been put down. Frankly, if you value your life at all, do NOT go to the Right Wing! All the good comments have surely been posted by members of staff/owners of the Right Wing.

 Great pick...
Had the opportunity to be in Edinburgh for 3 days in '07 and spent quite a few hours at Hebrides. There was this amazing pear beer (heavy stuff, high in alcohol content) that I'd never had before and haven't had since. Delicious. The better whiskeys are well worth the price of a shot. Leave you feeling nice and toasty. The locals at the bar are amazingly friendly, even to the yanks. I'd be back there in a minute if I could get there.

Has now changed hands and the staff are less friendly. The variety of real ale is still good and the beer and lager seem to have maintained their old prices but everything else (behind the bar and from the kitchen) has gone up in price considerably.

 Old nags
What a cheesy dump of a place. It hasn't been cleaned since 1974,check the mirror, and some of the women are straight out of the black lagoon.
Christ knows what you could catch in there and the bogs are mingin.

Good laugh on recent night out and was cheapest in the west end. Went back after a nearby bar charged almost £1 more more for same pint! Famous pub with brilliant deals...

 A real pub
A top pub. I usually visit Edinburgh a couple of times each year and always head to Kays Bar for great ale and excellent value food. Haggis neaps and tatties make me very happy!

 The old moat eh?
Nice comments Bobby! I used to manage the moat for a while. Hello to all by the way. Although there was the occasional heated exchange I thought it was a pleasure to work and drink in! Much better than most pubs in the area, and cerainly less trouble than any inner city boozer.

P.S. watch out for Biffo on fridays he he....

it did used to be a lap dancing bar called miss b have inn, but it got closed down because of some licencing issue. so its just a bar now. but if your looking for a good, top class lap dancing ( stripper ) go to Liquorice Club. its probably the best one in edinburgh now.
Friday, February 9, 2007Rating: rosettes

i thought that tipplers was already a lap dancing bar christian? or has typical edinburgh council closed it?
Friday, February 9, 2007Rating: rosettes

 Was directed to go here
Met a local bus driver who suggested my wife and I stop there for lunch. Upon nearing the Canny Man I noticed an exterior sign listing the rules. No cell phones! Perfect I thought! Was befuddled by the write and order system at the bar but so what? Asked for a table in the dining room and when seated noticed the patrons were apparently well heeled and well behaved. Family groups on special day outings, couples out for a meal and a drink, etc. I absolutley loved my selection from the menu. The waitress did warm up to us and was actually very pleasant. I had read many reviews on many sites about how bad this place is in their treatment of customers. That was not our experience at all. It is eclectic to say the least. I could not find fault with it and when next back in Edinburgh would go back for lunch there in a heartbeat. Still scratching my head over the U.S. themed country music that was playing but it was better than the ear splitting volume techno pop blaring at some places.

No atmosphere, watery drinks, dreadful music, aggressive bouncers. The most disgusting toilets I have ever seen. Will never, ever, ever, go there again.

Its my 18th soon and i was wondering if anyone knew a great place to go. although i hav been up town before there still places i havnt been. any suggestions?????? thanx x
Monday, January 22, 2007Rating: rosettes

Went on Saturday evening. Dire wedding reception music. Lacked any atmosphere - unless you count the toilets which were truly revolting. Oh yeah, and the boucers were animals. Avoid at all costs.

 Bouncers are facist thugs!
We went to Mood for a hen night, and I have never met such a bunch of thugs as the bouncers. At the end of the night we handed in four tickets to the cloak room and only received three items, missing the hen's handbag. When she argued this with the attendants, the bouncers appeared and literally carried her out and barred her - like we would ever go back! And don't even get me started on the state of the toilets. Go to any nightclub but this one!

Just a shame that everytime it opens...ideots ruin a good pub by fighting everynight...yes once again this pub is closed down.......

The voice of reason
 RE alicia
Any premises with an alcolhol licience found guilty of serving under 18s will lead to huge fines and loss of licience.
It it therefore your obligation to verify your (or your guests) age.
In many other countries a uk driving licience will not be considored a valid form of ID as it is not recognised in that country.
If you worked on a bar and someone offered a foereign ID, how would you know it is not a forgery ? Unless you were from that country and could recognise a fake or valid ID ?? Obviously you wouldnt be able to tell , therefore i think they made the right choice by not serving you.

Have a good day

I love mood, i am always there, never out of the place. It's the only place I go these days. I was in there on Saturday 13th January 2007 for a friends birthday. We were all dressed as docters and nurses. We all had a really good night and were drunk as per usual

 Boycott Cloisters
The horrendous treatment I received here has led me to launch a campaign to boycott Cloisters. I am an American who has studied and worked in Edinburgh for the past 2 years and have never had a problem ordering a drink anywhere. That is until I tried to show my visiting American friends, age 23 and 26, what a cute, cozy pub was like in Edinburgh. I chose Cloisters because it was a bitterly cold night and they have a fireplace, and the lack of loud music would have made it ideal for us to complete a few crosswords. We had barely sat down for 3 minutes before the bartender intensely asked us if we would be buying a drink or just sitting. Feeling rushed to buy a drink (most places give you a moment to think of what you want and to survey what’s on tap), my 23 yrs old friend went up to the bar to order. She promptly came back and said she needed to get her ID that she had left in her wallet. Her boyfriend of 26 went back up to the bar with her where we were rudely told that they only accepted passports or UK driver licenses, (our passports were at the B&B or home) and that our American driver licenses were invalid. Then, we were condescendingly told that we had to be over 18 to legally be allowed in the pub, and since we could not verify our age with the appropriate documentation, we would have to leave. I have never been treated so rudely! None of us looked underage, and the manner with which he asked us to leave was very unprofessional and discriminatory. Cloisters is advertised in many American guide books of the city, so you would expect them to recognise American IDs coupled with strong American accents. But apparently they want to keep their pub exclusively British. I will never again set foot in Cloisters, and I will definitely make sure than any other Americans that are thinking of visiting Edinburgh should know to avoid such a terrible place.

 A Great Experience
A pub where you can leave the cares of the world outside and get lost in conversation with friends with a great real ale in your hand. Cozy and relaxed.

 Dont Bother
Mood is poplular with students simply beause its a cheap place to get drunk. Aside frm that there is nothing much going for it. Last time i was there (ages ago) there was broken glass everywhere. Spilt drinks all over the floor and some tables were not cleared all night. The bouncers didnt have a clue about anything either, i witnessed 2 fights none of which were broken up, however one guy got thrown out after argueing over wrong change. Go elsewere several good clubs are not far away.

 love it!!!
I came to Edinburgh for two weeks and spent most of it hanging out in the Brass Monkey. Everyone who works there is great and the pub it's self is a friendly and clean environment. You can meet people from all around the world and if you go I bet you'll have a blast!

Well I'm totally Bitter & Twisted about the Golden Rule and I love it!!! You will never get a better pint of ale, lager or guest lager/beer in Edinburgh. Along with the bar staff, it makes the Rule the best anytime pub that I've ever been to. Unfortunately I've been in OZ for 14 months, drinking lesser beers, but I will be back for my Bitter & Twisted Ale in the rule where everyone hopefully still knows my name.........David!!!!!

 Great atmosphere!
Some times can be a little bit busy on the dancefloor as its quite small but music is cheesy but good. Ok for a starting place on a night out in auld reekie!
Sunday, January 7, 2007Rating: rosettes

Waited ages to be served as the staff were busy attending to what seemed to be regulars. The food we ordered was not as described on the menu(soup of the day with thick cut bloomer and a platter of butter)no bloomer no butter!!!
Welsh rarebit(a whole mini farmhouse loaf with a mustard dressing covered in toasted cheese and drizzled with worcester sauce)in reality was on a quarter slice of panini bread.
The Manager? just sniggered and made us feel uncomfortable for pointing this out, and the chef? passed our table 3 times to glare at us for having the ordasity to question the menu.
Not recommended if you want to feel welcome give it a miss.

St Vincent
A fairly large pub with double frontage halfway along Rose St. Whilst it is not exactly anti-English is doesn't seem too tourist friendly. Local rumours tell of the attempted murder of an English bank manager here some years ago when it was called The Goblet. Perhaps he turned someone down for a loan.

In one corner of the bar you will find a small window seat next to which you can see where a telephone was once located. In the days before mobile phones this was colloquially known as I'll be home late corner.

Good traditional pub with decent beer and lively atmosphere. Graeme Pearson live act was good and barmaids pleasant even though overworked. I would definitely go back when in Edinburgh. Good extensive menu although did not eat there.

 The Poly
New management - they are exactly what the neighbourhood needs! I went in for my drink as usual and found the staff to be better than ever before - the new manager took time to speak to everyone and listen to their thought and has promised to take some action to improve the pub. What a breathe of fresh air

 Good surprise
Popped into Mathers for a pint after watching the Edinburgh derby on Boxing Day and was pleasantly surprised to see they have now installed Sky TV. This is a fantastic addition to an already great bar - I'll definitely be in more often now! The atmosphere was excellent and friendly and as usual the beer was great. Still Edinburghs best bar!

I was in Mood in August on a stag night with about 30 guys, all drunk and dancing like drunks do. Everyone had a great time, it was an excellent atmosphere, no complaints really, except it is at the wrong side of town for me, a trek and a half.

 A wonderfull traditional pub
Visited the Tolbooth on Thursday 14th December with my office party, had never been in before, what a hidden gem. The guys really know how to keep their beer and very pleasant, efficient service. A bit of a walk down the Royal Mile, but well worth the effort

 quaint & very friendly
I was in Deacon Brodies at the beginning of December with my grandchildren, we were upstairs in the restaurant, where the staff do a great job and were very friendly, especially to the boys. The food was excellent, I had the salmon and prawn salad, beautiful, my husband had the steak pie, home made scrummy. Deacons is well worth a visit when you are in Edinburgh.

nothing changes - for the better
Only get to Edinburgh a couple of times a year - but always make my way here.
Got to be one of the capital's best pubs. Brilliant atmosphere and proper old school atmosphere. Still great value. A timeless classic.

Standard city centre T & J Bernard dive, bad beer, dirty, smells of wee, lousy food and no atmosphere - head for Thistle Street or the Guildford/Cafe Royal and give this one a miss.

 Crazy pub
I like this pub. Its very old and trad.
Some mad punters to be had !
Theer are the crazy locals and the mad old ex war vets. The place needs Sky Sports though as there is no football shown at all. It could be great bar if this was the case.
