10/10 for the worst food ever
Ridiculously over-priced. Baked potato with cheese - or rather cheese glued to the plate and none on the actual potato. The salad looked a week old, my guess is the cheap tesco brand?

Chicken burger - looked like 2 defrosted chicken breasts with a piece of raw bacon on-top. Sickening.

My advice - sack the chef and buy some fresh food!

 Totally Gone Downhill
I hate to say it, but I will not be back either. The druggie staff seem to have no regard whatsoever for the customers.

 Won't Be Back!
I was reminded of the old joke what do you find under a ponytail? Answer: A horse's ass. on a visit to Sandy Bell's yesterday. I've been in and out of this bar for nearly 40 years, but after yesterday, I won't be back. I ordered a pint of IPA and a wine, £5.50 handed over a £20 note and got £4.50 change. I immediately queried this and was treated like I was an idiot. I was accused of only handing over a £10 note, 'cos there's only one in the till an it wasn't there 5 minutes ago. The guy sitting next to me had just paid for his drink with a £10 note he later told me and the barmaid. Then I had to wait 10 minutes whist the barman checked the tills. After all that I was grudgingly handed 2 £5 notes with a mumbled, that's never happened before. All I can say is Nice Try Mate but pick on some less awake next time. I won't be back under your stewardship!

 Lost its charm
Sadly have to agree that Bells has lost its charm. Not as welcoming or friendly as before. Musicians seemed to be playing by the numbers. Bring back Charlie!

 Great little bar
This is a fabulous traditional little bar, tastefully done, very neat and friendly and there seems to always be some live music.

 Traditonal Old pub
A hidden gem! In the heart of historic Edinburgh and beside The Old College University quadrant. We came across this by accident but the lady behind the bar was very friendly. The pub was recently re-opened and has traditional folk music in the evenings. A young girl came in and played violin on the afternoon that we were there. She seemed to have a few friends sitting with her and it was a wonderful atmosphere if a little quiet.

 love it!!!
I came to Edinburgh for two weeks and spent most of it hanging out in the Brass Monkey. Everyone who works there is great and the pub it's self is a friendly and clean environment. You can meet people from all around the world and if you go I bet you'll have a blast!

 Definitely worth popping in
Great atmosphere - a cosy, friendly vibe. Agree with the last reviewer - it must be the best jukebox in Edinburgh. Always a couple of cracking real ales on too.

Geat bar! It's the people that make it!
Just read some less than flattering remarks elsewhere about the unsympathetic refurbishment - apparently Gordon Brown and Donald Dewar. Despite the few flaws The Brass Monkey is one of my favourite bars in Edinburgh! It's great that you can really lounge about and make new friends very quicky.

 Brilliant music pub
Excellent! Wonderful ambience. The main musicians that I saw were 4 fiddlers, a guitarist, a bodhran player and a whistle and clarinet player. I asked if I could join them and played on my couple of egg shakers.

It was very crowded! Do like I did and get there by 8.30 or you'll find yourself standing all evening.

 Great for tourists and locals
A great bar - I have taken numerous visitors from overseas (some of whom rarely,if ever, venture into bars). they all have loved the bar, the locals and of course the music. This is a must for visitors and locals.

in Scotland. Locals provide great chat from

 The best reading pub
I lived in Edinburgh for about 3 months a few years back to get away from it all and write a book. I went to The Old Bell almost nightly to read books and enjoy a good pint. The atmosphere is perfect, not too bright but not too dim. Wooden tables, stone walls. Lovely!

grey grey grey, what a boring lifeless pub. no longer can one find vets vomitting in the corner. no atmosphere, tryingto be a pretentious yah bar

 It has Changed!
This use to be a great student pub, where you could rely on the cheap drinks and grungy atmosphere! Now it has been modernized with adverse effect! It has changed so much that I can guarantee that it has lost most of its old customers! It’s no longer going to be my local!

 Best pub in the world!
I have been in a few, and this was very special to me. The atmosphere is unique. To be called by my first name the third time I entered the pub, and also be invited to play along with some very fine musicians... It's really special. Although I didn't dare to play, I really enjoyed the offer and the occasionally wonderful music. It made my trip to Scotland. Michael is a good guy, may Sandy Bells prevail as a true part of Scottish culture in a rather touristic city. People and music gives a lot more to a tourist than a buying a red wig and a lousy bagpipe for five pounds. Thanks!

 Its Alive!!
Definately alive on the saturday night we went but the menu was inviting and the staff friendly, it got louder too and being on the wrong side of 45 i had to leave. (My wife was with me) We did go back the following day around tea time when it was much quieter but the food was as good and the waitress just as nice. A worthwhile visit.

 The New Bell is it!
I wasn't downstairs, but I visited the New Bell about two weeks ago and found it to be phantastic.

The food, the wine, the service: I found it nothing short of perfect.
I can fully understand the description of the duck dish described above.

 cosy, friendly

Now boasts one of the best selections of Single Malt Whisky in the Edinburgh Southside, and a juke-box with a classic pop bias.
Interesting guest ales and friendly banter are stock in trade.

 Scotland's Nostalgia
Hello, i'm a french guy who lived in Edinburg formerly. I apologize for my english but I don't have a really good english. I don't know if this place still working but I worked in the kitchen of the New Bell restaurant five years ago and it was a really good and famous restaurant.
I ate few times and the duck was orgasmic (a nice customer said us one time)
The Boss were really nice (Rick and Michelle) and the chef funny (Didier).
The Old Bell was really good too (downstairs).

 great sofa
Most of the back room is raised about a foot off the floor and covered in rugs, cushions and wee tables with drinks holders. The walls are covered from foot to ceiling in old movie posters. It's a great place to go and relax with some mates.

Spirt of the age
 What happened?
the Junction bar used to serve the best food in the Southside. Stunning home made burgers, fantastic steaks, and a particularly ming blowing chilli. It now seems to be a hovel were old men gather and wait to die, and the place smells appalling. Wouldn't let my dog eat there now!

You've been in Heaven when you've been there!!!!
Forget about the lager, the ales and the malts...you can get all them in any good pub in Edinburgh but the best laugh of your life you can only have it with the locals at Swany's...specially with Mr Camp...the only one...the best...the unique!!!!!

Hasn't been the Woolpack for a long time.. wall to wall students with 200 decibel voices, even without the beer improving the student population would put you off it! Was better appreciated in its former life as a newspaper wholesalers! Woolpack indeed! PISH!

 I used to work there
I worked at The Doctor's Bar in 1995/1996 with Bryony, Clare and Lee who were the managers at the time. I had a great time as part of my stay in Europle (I'm from New Zealand) and made a lot of friends when I worked there.

One of the best I've been in!
I've been going to the Brass Monkey for a while, and its by far one of my favourite. Staff are very friendly, good music, fireplace, leather seats, seperate rooms, and the mini-theatre with a BED! Now thats one nice touch. Reasonably good prices, especially for Edinburgh. I highly recommend it!
