Sad memory still of what had been a lovely time !
Perhaps 2004 or thereabouts, which can be verified by the management as the following incident was related the following day by a hand-delivered letter, the following experience happened. I had entered this establishment around 2.30p.m. one day, and perhaps was only one of no more than a handful of other customers. I was greeted by a young bar-tender and had a pint of Guinness, as I remember, sitting at the bar enjoying conversation with the bar-tender. Having left my mother literally across the other side of the street at Jamaica Mews, I left as my intention was to ascertain whether I felt I would like to take my mother across to the bar, who is a lady who has just turned ninety-five years old. Five to ten minutes later my mother and I entered and sat away from the bar enjoying each other's company, and our craic. By around five o'clockish the bar became busier, particuliar as it was nearing the end of some business employees working day. My mother and I had several drinks in an ordered and even fashion and a table to our right became occupied by three, perhaps four respectable younger ladies. After they had sat there for fifteen or twenty minutes or so as they were on my immediate right-hand side I happened to make a civil comment to which they responded happily and another by me to which there was laughter. That was the end of any exchange. I was there to be there with my mother, and had no need of any other company, being always open to persons entering ours should it happen, with grace. When I next went to the bar to order another drink for ourselves, a new bar-tender who had come on duty around five o'clock after serving, said ' could I stay in my own company '. I was bewildered by this but made no mention of it to my mother. Around six thirty time my mother required to go to the toilet, and I escorted her there as there were stairs to it and she did not know where to go anyway. I waited in that ante-room and eventually perched myself on the cushioned window-sill patiently waiting for my mother. Two young gentlemen who were enjoying their conversation after a few moments acknowledged the fact that I was there, so we exchanged pleasantries, and fell silent. Whilst still waiting for my mother the bar-tender appeared at this section and removed some empty glasses and said, ' I thought I said to stay in your own company ', to which I made no response, as he walked away. I escorted my mother back to our seats. A few minutes later I returned to the bar and ordered, and was served. Eventually I returned to the bar once again and was told ' I was not being served '. On my return I discreetly mentioned to my mother, in time, what the situation was, and so eventually we left.

This type of behaviour should never be acceptable. What issue the bar-tender had I do not know I did not ask him. All I should like to end this tale is by saying I am not in the habit of being asked to leave a licensed premises. Indeed I have been known to be encouraged to stay by an establishment's ambience.

I have never returned to this bar !

In every tale there is a story, I trust you never have to tell yours.

New owner
 New Ownership
Hello fellow pub-lovers,
I just wanted you to know that Dirty Dick's is under new ownership, so please not to judge us by previous comments! Fresh fresh food and very carefully kept ales. We'd also love to think our staff are happy and well looked after.

What is this latest trend in Edinburgh pubs all about? Every pub you go into now in the afternoon has reserved signs from a certain time on the tables. Since when could you reserve a table in a pub? Or is this the staff keeping tables for regulars and friends?

Best fish and chip sharing platter
Last Friday my daughter and I made a day trip to Edinburgh to meet up with my sister in law from Livingston.
After walking the Royal Mile we decided to have lunch before hitting the shops, so we all had a Tennants lager to quench our thirst and decided to share the fish and chip platter.
Delicious choice - white fish (I hate any shade of grey fish) scampi, sausage bites, onion rings and chips. Served with small bowls of ketchup, mayo, mushy peas and tartare sauce.
Pleased I didn't read any reviews before heading up there.

 Great bar
What a great place, if you want to be cool, this is not the bar for you.. if you want to party, this is definitely the place for you. the piano man plays all the songs you want to sing and dance too at the top of your voice, like pianoman, don't stop believing, hey jude etc.. drinks are pricey as it is a late night, live entertainment venue, open til 3am..
entrance is free, and the doorman are some of the most accommodating in the city.. if you like rock'n'roll high energy piano entertainment.. its the bar for you!

fingers has been around for over 25years and has a faithful and loyal customer base.. people from all walks of life, working class, upper class, students. the typical customer is the kind of person who doesn't notice 'how sticky the floor is', especially when their hands are in the air and having the time of their life. people don't come to fingers to find themselves, they come to loose themselves!!

well worth trying out.. gets busy from midnight onwards..

 Not Impressed
The sign outside says biggest & best fish & chips. Imagine my dissapointment when I was served grey fish. Not Cod or Haddock but a totally tasteless fish that I could not even identify & not would I want to. Tourists must wonder what all the fuss is about if this is what they are served.

 Names of Poets
It must be well over a decade ago that I first drew attention to the management that the names of Norman MacCaig and Hugh MacDiarmid are misspelled on the elaborate notice you have outside your entrance. Nothing was done about it, nor on a subsequent occasion I drew attention to it. It really looks bad in our Capital City and does your business no favours..

Given the fuss they make of the bar's literary history, you'd think they'd at least spell Hugh MacDiarmid's and Norman MacCaig's names correctly on the signage. Clearly don't care that much about literature, as long as it helps bring in the punters.

 Can agree enough
Further to the comments left by previous patron. I am still at a loss to work out how you go from asking dog to shut up to being a gay basher!!!
Maybe the dog owners need to be more In tune with there dog than there sexuality?

It is people like that.that give the gay Comunity a bad name

Yapping dog owned by irksome Gay man???
The comments made by the gentleman about his young yapping dog are curious to daft - where is the correlation between the patrons dissatisfaction about having to remove a noisy dog (a totally reasonable request) and the suggestion/allegation that the bar tender has shown disquiet at the customer's sexual orientation??? A preposterous notion with no foundation whatsoever - idiotic and self indulgent oversensitive clap trap - Kay's is an excellent establishment and continues to this day even after 25 years of patronage!!
Sunday, November 6, 2011Rating: rosettes

 Pets not welcome!
Having visited Kays for many years with and without a dog; I was recently asked to leave because my dog made a noise!!!! Said dog was being petted by STAFF and other patrons and being young is apt to yap and play when petted - to be asked by staff to leave because he made a noise after staff had been causing him to be playful rather begs belief... (it was an un-recognised barman, who seemed none too keen on having gay men in the pub.....)

My house overlooks Kays and I've always been tolerant of the odd noisey episode, but in future I will note and report every episode of antisocial behaviour to the relevant authorities.

A sad decline in a once grand local institution.

 Cold Food
Four of us called into this pub for a drink and the menu looked very tempting so we decided to order. 2 of us complained about the food being cold, we were ignored and no attempt was made to rectify the situation. Wouldnt reccomend as there are plenty of other eateries in the vacinity. Wouldnt go back!!

I visited this bar a while back and was disgusted that my Jack Daniels & cole was only half full, when i asked if I could have a full glass which Im sure I paid for, I was asked for an extra pound. i visited again on the weekend forgetting my first experience & was dissapointed the problem still existed. the bar is great unfortunately the staff are somewhat judgmental or their customers & seem to take a liking to only those who have common interests or similar to themselves in their quirky personalaties....I would sugest to take a look at the bar then leave

 Biggest Dive in Rose Street
This pub is probably the worst in Rose Street. No food, bunch of old guys who's language can only be described as 'choice'. Badly managed by some woman who has no evident skills. Not recommended!

 Why bother?
The only plus I can think of is the small beer garden at the rear. Otherwise the surly barman and indifferent service make it a place to avoid with so many other attractive options nearby.

4 of us had lunch today in your pub and the food was poor and so was the service. The bar was unattended and we waited some time to be served both at the bar and the table. 3 of us ate salmon with noodles and it was very dry and tastless. We had visited twice before and on these occasions found our food and service excellent. Very disappointing today especially as we had brought friends with us.

Spent a few hours in this pub on Monday 9th August 2010. Joanne behind the bar is very friendly and a great wee bar person. We were made to feel welcome and had a good bit of banter with the locals. Would recommend this pub to everybody it has great atmosphere great prices and we will definately visit when we come back to Edinburgh.
From the three Paisley buddies thank you for a great afternoon.

I was extemely lucky to find this pub early in my 3 years of working in Scotland. It is my favorite pub with excellent pints, drams, and food. The staff made me feel welcome and at home from the start of my early visits to Edinburgh. Just wonderful folks and atmosphere.

 Middle-aged men refused service
I’m holidaying in the UK from Australia and was refused service by the unfriendly Manager because my 34 year old Asian friend was not carrying any identification. We have visited pubs all over the UK and this is the only place that has been a problem. I wonder why. My complaint was brushed aside. They refused to tell me the last time they’d asked a 34 year old Caucasian for his identification. The company said “Under the current laws the person responsible for running any bar is permitted to refuse service for any number of reasons ... a reason does not have to be given.” Left a very sour taste in our mouths and spoiled our visit to Edinburgh.

 Visit to Scotland
I visited the pub while I was in Edinburgh for the British open. We stayed near there, and found this place walking back from Waverly station. We went there once every night. I loved the atmosphere, and the service was fantastic. I especially thought Sarah was fantastic. I am a big fan of her. However, the estabishment is fantastic, and I wish Washington DC would get a place like that. I will be back, and will let everyone know about this place.

 Good Choice
It's only one and a half hours journey by train from Newcastle to Edinburgh and on our many visits our plans usually include a visit to this pub. We enjoy the good choice of real ales provided and the variety of food available. Lest I forget...........the prices of both are great.

the cheapest beer is 3 (three) pounds,
two would have been a bargain.

yes, cheapest pint cost you 3 sterling pound here.

 another awful pub
A pint of cheapest lager, Foster's in this case, cost you 2 pounds. And the fat ageing Goth bartender gives you a bad pint well short of 400ml, and when you ask to to fill it up, he would take an offence, AVOID like a plague. I am telling you for your sake, from the bottom from my heart! They are Mr Hyde not the Jekylle. Avoid!!!! there are lots of decent pubs in edinburgh, not this one.

Colin are you mad?
The Tap was one of THE best places in Stockbridge to go for a nice lunch/dinner. Maybe the food being served before was spoiling us a bit too much, but I know I will never eat there again. The food I was served a week ago was god awful in comparison to what it was before. Unseasoned, ugly, bland and most importantly BORING. Still a lovely place to drink, and the staff as always are fantastic, but if you're wanting something nice for your tea, head to Bells or the Blue Parrot!

the kitchen at the Tap went from pies to excellent meals. But you're too late for that now folks. The Stockbridge Tap kitchen has closed as a result of the parent company wanting to double the chef's rent. A plate of goose that laid the golden egg anyone?

Waited ages to be served as the staff were busy attending to what seemed to be regulars. The food we ordered was not as described on the menu(soup of the day with thick cut bloomer and a platter of butter)no bloomer no butter!!!
Welsh rarebit(a whole mini farmhouse loaf with a mustard dressing covered in toasted cheese and drizzled with worcester sauce)in reality was on a quarter slice of panini bread.
The Manager? just sniggered and made us feel uncomfortable for pointing this out, and the chef? passed our table 3 times to glare at us for having the ordasity to question the menu.
Not recommended if you want to feel welcome give it a miss.

St Vincent
A fairly large pub with double frontage halfway along Rose St. Whilst it is not exactly anti-English is doesn't seem too tourist friendly. Local rumours tell of the attempted murder of an English bank manager here some years ago when it was called The Goblet. Perhaps he turned someone down for a loan.

In one corner of the bar you will find a small window seat next to which you can see where a telephone was once located. In the days before mobile phones this was colloquially known as I'll be home late corner.

 past its best
Me and my friends used to visit this bar regularly and it was a great bar. However, recently it has steadily gone downhill. The toilets are disgusting and the gents are always flooded. The ketchup is left on the tables well after food has stopped being served. On my most recent visit the beer served was out of date and the fridge was not working thus the beer was therefore warm. There was no apology from the bar staff. Milnes would be a fantastic pub if refurbished, cleaned and managed properly.

Updated and now called Bar Twist
I have to say that i was a regular of the Newtown Bar before the recent make over and thankully I am still a regular.

Gone is the traditional look and in comes a much more contemporary feel to the place. Good food on at lunchtimes which is a bonus and not city centre prices either!

Yes it is still predominantly a more mature gay mans bar but woman are often found in the place and adding to the great atmosphere.

Well done guys for updating the bar

 Best Real Ale in Stockbridge/Newtown!
A mate and I popped in to this brilliant wee boozer last night to take in the champions league football with a few real ales. The ale was of the highest quality and the bar staff were also really helpful and knowledgable. Equally as good was the four screens on offer, two showing the Celtic game and two showing the Man U game. Definitely a great bar for lovers of beer and sport and will definitely return to try their food menu during the day which the locals assured me is excellent!

Nice to visit but dodgy to work
I am another in the growing list of staff that has left this establishment unhappy. The place is run purely for profit with no thought for the staff. I have been shortchanged on many occasions and never more so with tips, the staff who deserve them see barely a fraction of what they take. The only thing that made it bareable was the staff who somehow put up with the crap and make it fun still.

This would have to be one of the worst bars to spend your money at. The beer is off, or quite literally off - they allways run out.. funny considering how quite they are. The Manager doesn't have a clue. I worked here thinking this place was something else, only to find out that it was a laughing stock... Only worked there for a few months but in those months along nearlly every staff member has left and the beer.... well it is really expensive and still OFF.

A group of us go to Edinburgh once or twice a year and we always end up in here. It's not the most spacious but the staff are friendly and i like the little paper beer mat they put under every single drink you buy! Oh and the buckets of free matches are great to stick in your wallet if you ever get caught without a lighter (even though i doubt they have them anymore with the no smoking everywhere)

 Great pub, great ale
Was drinking in this place recently and it made an excellent impression. The real ale is probably the best I've had in Edinburgh, especially the Deuchars. The place is well kept and the staff were all extremely friendly. Ten out of ten.

Spot on pub (ignore negative comments)
This pub is fantastic, it has a great atmosphear and a good place for a laugh, on stag nights or partys. However when going to the toilet dont forget to take a book with you!!!

 Loved it
It was years ago that I visited Edinburgh - but I still talk about this pub. Living in South Africa, I miss all the decent cask beers. Brett Riverboat is obviously not all there. If he doesn't like the size of the place - don't go there. I would kill for another visit!!

This is the greatest pub EVER
I love all Hogshead pubs. They have such a great atmosphere and I always feel really safe in them. The clientel is also delightful, not at all threatening. They have a great selection of beers too. Carling, Carslberg and Tennants. My boyfriend Tony loves it too.

 Best entertainment in Edinburgh
Dunno who the the supposed miming piano player was, and I am a very 30 something who never has trouble getting in. The beer is pricey but the weekend crowd enjoying a singalong to the likes of Cass (does he still play? - He's over 60) or whoever playing the tunes is just about a good an atmosphere as you can get.

The Best Wee Boozer in Edinburgh
Fantastic small pub in edinburgh, at least 6 guest ales, plus IPA onsite. Try and go there to have a good pint from either Atlas or Harviestoun's and you're in for a good time. Excellent bar staff, shame about the tv on blink during last 10 mins of sweden v T&T ha ha.

 Good pub with great folk.
This a really good 'proper' pub tucked down in the basement on bohemian St Stephen Street in Stockbridge. Probably the best pub in Edinburgh for an informal (turn up and play) folk session (Every Thursday night 9 to midnightish). Highly recommended!

If only Edinburgh had more 'real' pubs like this and less 'style bar' poser palaces with sky high prices and unauthentic 'theme' pubs with conversation killing loud music, wall to wall stag and hen parties and bog standard global brand beers! If that's your bag then stick to George Street, Rose Street, Grassmarket and Lothian Road, but if not take a stroll down to Stockbridge for a more pleasant alternative.

If you enjoy a friendly, attractive, authentic pub with decent beer and great music the Antiquary might just become your favourite pub in Edinburgh too!

Great food, great drink, great sevice!
I'm really surprised to read the review by 'anonymous' because I was at Hamiltons last night and had a very good meal! My friends that were with me hadn't been before and were very impressed also! The food was of the highest quality and I certainly didnt need to go anywhere to eat afterwards, in fact I stayed and drank in the bar until closing time! wonderful!

 Bad staff gone!
Following my bad experience with the duty manager (see below), I wrote to the manager to complain. I immediately got a letter back from him saying that that duty manager had left - a good thing! Also, he would talk to the other staff to make it didn't happen again. And as an apology for the experience, he even offered me a complimentary meal for two and a bottle of wine
:-). I think I'll redeem it, despite Anonymous' terrible indictment of the food.
Monday, May 8, 2006Rating: rosettes

 Absolute Rubbish

I dont normally write reviews about anything that I feel is poor or good about restaurants...However, Hamiltons was the only expection - as it was really poor to the point of embaressment. We have a meal for six and the food was cold and of poor quantity and quality. The beer also tasted off. Dont go here its a rip off. We paid, we left...had to go somewhere else to fill our stomachs.

Lovely setting, shame about the staff
I've been a regular at Hammies for years, both eating and drinking, and had, until last night, always enjoyed my experience there. Last night, I was having a quiet pint with some friend just before closing, when the 'so-called' manager suddenly started laying into us for not finishing up our drinks. It was only 25 minutes after last orders, but he just got really agressive, told us to leave now and said he would be happy if we never came back again! Well, no worries about that, mate!

 what a great pub!
Dear sirs,
After a particularly enjoyable experience in the U.K we feel we must comment on the exeptional service we received in Milnes Bar. the food was enjoyable but the staff made our visit all the more special, We did not expect to recieve such good service in a pub atmosphere. Thanks very much for getting the information about the bus tours, we didn't expect it!!!!
From a happy customer.

As the duty manager on that occasion, I feel these circumstances were outwith my control. I understand it was not ideal, but to cut that particular speaker off would have resulted in the entire pub being silenced. I tried to help by suggesting you move to another table which was readily availible. The lanuage which followed was offensive and unjustified. I feel it is unfair to judge an entire pub on the basis of one speaker breaking down. The other customers on that occasion (even the ones at the next table) commented that they had a very enjoyable experience and didn't ask for a full refund on all their drinks that night. I hope that the opinion of of one abusive customer will not influence the bar as a whole. Anyone that's been here regularly will know that this is a pub that people will return to.

Its called Fingers. Make your own mind up
When I tell my friends in London that I go to a pub (regularly) called Fingers, they assume I've turned into a sex pest. When I explain in detail the nature of the beast, they are convinced I've turned into the worst kind of sex pest. One who prays on not only the drunk and the bored, but the ugly. My friend who actually is Jamie Somerville has been seen doing the burping worm breakdance (his very own) in here, and I've been lying on the piano singing at the top of my voice. There isn't much gets you kicked out of here..... Its a place to watch and be watched, as long as you realise everyone's laughing.....

I spent some wonderful nights here sipping cider by the fire and writing letters. I loved this place when I lived in Edinburgh. Sometimes I wish I could walk out of my flat and pop in for a couple of pints. Unfortunately, that would now require a long plane ride...

been a regular dinner at dirty dicks but latley the standard of service has dropped, influx of forgein labour, try not to speak in a scottish accent as they cant understand you. my partner orderd baked tattie with trout the potato(tattie) was rock hard, we returned it only to be told all the tatties were hard and not cooked, time 7pm! a chef that cant bake a tattie i ask you! we asked for the dish back minus the tatie only to be given salmon in the confusion, we couldnt complain a second time as we had already caused a fuss and felt intimidated with the chef and waiters glancing at us and left the meal, staff tried to be as helpfull as poss but not going back

Dining experience in quaint pub with atmosphere.
I took American guests there and now as a concierge/tour guide I am recommending it again. The place is reached via the back of Jury's Inn and not recommended passage at night time. Taxis do take you to this place safely. It has an atmosphere that is accentric, and fun, and the food is good. Staff were delightful in seeing to my guests needs. What is written can be said of most transient workers conditions. I recommend getting there early in the evening and taking a taxi back to your hotel.

 It's a real pub!
The Cat and Bagpipes (now named The Rose and Crown) is a gorgeous wee pub hidden away at the west end of Rose St. With extremely friendly and helpful staff, good quality scottish scran (food!) and live music every week, I would definately recommend making the effort.

The locals who are regulars have obviously known each other for years and seem to choose the Rose and Crown for it's authenticity of being a 'real' pub, where the attraction is lager, ale, whiskies and good ol' banter between friends!

 Very Dodgy and Fake Performances
This bar has a very good good reputation for live music, but upon closer inspection of one of the performers last week I noticed something funny... he was miming the piano! if it's good live music you want, try the Jazz club or Whistle Binkies in old town.

There are always fights at the end of the end and sometimes in the middle, please avoid if you are in any way self respecting!

After several visits I have decided I shall not be returning.

 Clean and basic
This hotel was basic, the pub scruffy and if you dont mind music till 1am it was fine. But we were charged £60 for a double room without toilet which in my opinion was way too much. £40 would have been more like it. But then its not just here that charge steep prices, the whole of Scottish/ British tourism need a good shake up. I'm currently looking at 2 star hotels in South of France for £50 toilet ensuite. Braeburn is a no star hotel. Oh and I am still waiting for the hotel to send on to me an item I left behind

 Fantastic night had by all
50 of us managed to get into the pub and corner the poor guitarist. He played all night long and the atmosphere was incredible.

Thanks to the guitarist (sorry, can't remember his name) and thanks to the pub for letting us all in.

Also, I'd like to thank the pub for refusing to serve me alcohol the previous night - on account of me being too smashed. Despite my protests, you were right, I was wrong.

Lived across the street at 62 Cumberland St in 1995. My favorite pub aside from being the most convenient. Good memories, good ales (especially Red McGregor). Gave me a pale of water to flush the loo one day when the pipes froze. Very cozy and traditional with friendly bar staff.

After queueing to get into Fingers Piano Bar for around 20 minutes on Friday night, my two frineds and I were told we weren't getting in because we don't want people like you in here. I would have thought 3 thirty somethings, not drunk, money to spend, on a night out were exactly who they wanted but there you go - apparently if the manager doesn't like the look of your face...... give it a miss if yuo have any reservations about it - and the toliets are disgusting!!

 Typical Weaterspoons!!
Cheap food(freshly microwaved to order). Real Ales are varied at times but often poorly kept and served. Service is actually bad most of the time with poorly paid and disinterested world travellers as bar staff. Now with TVs to support Weatherspoons greed. Alcopops is definetly the word and underaged drinking encouraged!!! Popular place for getting pissed early and then moving on to better places. Budget and binge drinkers very welcome!!

 Hamiltond BLT
Myself and three friends went to Hamiltons for brunch, 3 of us chose the BLT. It costs approx £6, we were expecting something pretty ok certainly above average. It was well below this. On two slices of standard white bread (certainly no better than Safeway Savers) were two bits of bacon, two slices of tomato, a few slices of lettuce and some relish. There were some tasty wedges on the side. I felt ripped off the others agreed.

 V Friendly also Ferret Free
Fantastic bar in the way a pub used to be. Great staff and an eclectic bunch from gnarled locals to Yah's.
Atmosphere has recently made a great step change. Beware don't come in if you have to leave in the next fourty years.

First Class Boozer! What a pub SHOULD be like!
Excellent wee howf! Magical blend of customers which works well. The ale is most acceptable, as is the comely wench of a manageress, Mags, whose undivided attention to all her customers is worthy of a mention.

Basic and decent enough for the money. Similar price as a hostel but more private, we got the cheap rate on www.travelstay.com

I am only giving it a 2 because I am still trying to get a refund as I was charged twice for my room. I would advise anyone else not to pay in cash as you will also be charged to your card and it's a real headache to get money back from people...

Quite a walk to Princes Street, more like 20 mins uphill, but the buses there are frequent and cheap.
