Was a smashing public house when run by Arthur Yearsley-It gained a late night license and was very popular-even having successful sports teams-

Hadn't been to the nags head since last Christmas due to poor health and was disappointed to hear that Alan and Laura had left as we always made a point of eating wherever Alan has worked during his career, but the new young man behind the bar seemed very pleasant and we were glad that the Guinness was as good as ever, though slightly sorry to see no real ales on offer, especially as it is a casque Mark pub.
Another surprise was that the mixed gril is now not on the menu as I always had that but I settled for a steak and my wife had good old fish and chips which took about 15 minutes to arrive.
Presentation was very good though I asked for my steak medium rare and it was nearer well done, quite tough too but not enough to complain about. My wife's fish was a good size and tasty though she said the batter was very greasy which was a shame. All in all not too bad but not worth rushing back for unfortunately.A lot of quality eating places around the area at the moment and personally I think the Nags Head needs to up it's game to remain competitive .

Me and my mate Dave Piits were on our way to Wrexham to watch our team play football. (Newport County)
us had a meal at the Nags we had steak & Chips which we enjoyed
But a couple of young pretty girls also had steaks but theirs were almost twice the size. cant help thinking because they were a couple of hot babes they got the big ones. Not Fair but i guess thats life.

 great place !
Good evening,
I can't seem to find anywhere to write a review so I thought I would just drop you this quick email.
We came into the Nags head today with my Nan and 2 year old son for some food before we travelled back to to Kent.
We were met by a very warm welcome into your pub and were treated how I would expect to be treated in a family pub, we were let outside so my son could play on the playground which was good fun for him and then we were served our food.
Now this was out of this world, me and my partner had the burger and my nan had the fish, my son was even served some chicken nuggets which were freshly made and I don't recall being on the menu, so it shows that you can cater for all needs, all the food was freshly made and served with a smile, I will certainly be coming back when were next up your way, thankyou for you hospitality and great experience, hope being new managers and staff for the pub really work out for you.
Kind regards
Nathan Green - Sittingbourne,Kent.

Please cut and paste into your review section if you have one.

 Not Good
Disappointed to see the previous tenants leave but as we like the pub we thought we`d give the new people a chance.
Went along for sunday lunch as usual but carvery was awful.Overdone meat, bland vegetables.Husbands steak was only just warm and very tough.Guy who I presume was the new owner seemed very cocky and unapproachable.Dont think we`ll be rushing back

Slated Dragon Playing Live 23rd June 2012
Get down to this pub Saturday 23rd June 2012 to watch Slated Dragon, an absolutely superb band who will rock the place I guaranteed you.
One of the best bands in the area playing a wide range of songs from Kings Of Leon, The Fratellis, Bon Jovi, AC/DC plus loads of other great covers from the 70's, 80's, 90's right up to todays top hits. Get there early as the place is going to be rocking.

My apologies,I just took it from the date of the review that Jackie ate there on the Saturday.Dont want to get involved in a row, just simply stating that Ive always had good food there, and a really warm welcome.
I suppose this site is like trip advisor and other review sites though, one person loves it one person hates it! Each to their own.

Just read both comments below. Phil how did you know Jackie ate on Saturday ?.Her comments are dated Saturday but she could have eaten there any day of the week. You ate on Saturday but didn't enter a comment until Friday so no clues there. The chef has admitted problem with cold air in kitchen.Probably repaired before you ate.

 Conflicting Reviews
Some of these reviews make me laugh !I ate on saturday night, the same as the reviewer below and my meal was excellent.I too had the mixed grill and my wife had the lamb shank. Both meals were presented well and were piping hot. Also thought the barman and the owner/chef were very friendly and welcoming.
Nice pint of real ale, roaring log fire and great food, the Nags has it all.Shame there arent more down to earth places likje this in wrexham.I,for one will definitely be going back.

 Reply to Jackie (Below)
Hi Jackie, sorry to hear of your comments but please could I address them.I am the owner and chef.I remember your meals well and I asked John, the barman to explain to you that we were having problems with cold air blowing round the kitchen, sorry if this was not conveyed.your steak and the mixed grill were returned to the chargrill to save you waiting and even then only for seconds, and you had fresh chips, not microwaved as suggested.had you again said you weren't happy I would have course fully refunded you, though when you were asked you told John that everything was fine now.we do have a comment card on each table and we put them all good or bad on the wall by the bar, though you chose not to leave one.I can assure you we have very few complaints and always strive to make the customer happy,so please once again accept my personal apologies and if you would like to contact me I would like to ask you and your husband to come back down to The Nags and Enjoy another meal On the House ....thanks Alan.

Really excited going back to Nags for birthday treat. Always had excellent food before fire. Welcome good, wine good. Starter very good. Mixed grill luke warm, sirloin steak and red wine sauce stone cold. Returned to kitchen where obviously microwaved. Steak now inedible. Even the free bottle of wine could not make up for a ruined birthday. Surely when a meal is returned it should be replaced not reheated and made even worse. Return again ? NEVER. Its not as if the chef was busy. Only 4 other people besides us. If only the chef could cook as well as the barmans courtesy in trying to but a bad situation right.

Lamb chops on what was supposed to be mashed potatoes . more like mush. swimming in gravy and surrounded with peas. medium rump was more than overdone with tips and peas. Medium rare rump . I DON'T think so ltd was terrible chips and peas an so called fried egg. what joke. My mother had the salmon which was served on top of 5 new potatoes and surrounded by YES! peas swimming in some disgusting sauce. I was last at this place 4 years ago and it was brilliant and i told them so. This the worst meal I have ever had. EVER had. What would Raised say?

 Welcomed back to pub :)
Our bike club always had our meetings in the Nags, but after constant no beer, not very friendly bar staff including the landlord- we moved to another pub. BUT after the fire, we were contacted by Alan ( New landlord), to be openly welcomed back to the Nags- which we have done- it's nice to be home after a long time away. thanks

 Bad service
Just come back from a dissapointing meal and service .
Firstly I had the fish and chips with tartar sauce which I have had there before and enjoyed .. the batter was rock hard and ladened with grease the chips looked were out of an economy bag of frozen chips hard and small ... after I sent the meal back as it was unsatisfactory A women approached our table of 6 and seemed annoyed that I had dared return a dish she said she had looked at the dish and it was fine ... No apology just defensive .I had the cajun chicken instead which was equally as dissapointing another economy looking chicken grill style thing...There was a reason only a dozen people were there on a saturday night... there are plenty of other good places to eat in Wrexham which I shall be doing in future.

When we arrived it seemed quite good, but as soon as we sat down, everything changed. There was a lingering smell from the waitress, Hannah I think her name was. After ordering a meal, it had been 1 hour; I decided to take matters into my own hands and went to the kitchen. When I got there, the chef was locked in the freezer. The chef was screaming his head of, shouting the fat land lord or Joe to come to the rescue. Joe came parading in, in a fireman suit, and a chain saw, to open the freezer. He cut the lock and the door flung open. The chef jumped out with excitement and relief and gave Joe a big kiss to show his gratitude. As that was our excitement for the day, me and my wife went to the door to leave and heard more screaming, we turned round and Joe was stuck in a bin, but this time the fat landlord had to get in the fireman suit, it was very revealing and my wife nearly threw up. The landlord managed to get Joe out of the bin and we decided we were to go home. We got in the car and as we were leaving, the fat landlord came running out completely naked, there was another lingering smell off the waitress.

to live the rest of your life. do not visit there

When entering the pub we had the worse welcome off the fat landlord he smelt real bad. the food took around 1hour 30mins to come. And was cold when it arrived. i think the chef didnt realy want to cook or hasnt heard of anything called a oven or how to heat something up. the toliets smelt and look like they have never been cleaned i would think a rat lives in clean conditions than this the beer wasnt working and they could only offer us tap water which we was charged for which cost us more than our meal 30!!!!! this is a disgrace for 1 pint of tap water. i also noticed the waitress dropping the food then picking it up and putting it back on the plate. I find this horrible i would not recommend it.

The food was horrible and a young chef, i think his name was Jack or Jake or something like that and he was not very proffesional.
The place was very smokey and people were smoking in there and they werent saying anything to them.
The toilets were hardly washed as seen on the chart the plates were dirty and the beer was warm. I would definatly not reccomend this resteraunt to anyone as it is terrible unless you are absolutely ass-mental

Went on Sat.2nd July at 2.00pm Didn't seem very busy on food. Overheard there was a 30min. wait. Were not told about any wait by staff when ordered two meals,{ wanted two Barnsley Chops but they only had one left} and a bottle of wine. After waiting 45min. and drinking nearly all the wine, we were told that the meal would be another 5min. We waited another 15 making a total of 65mins wait. When we asked to see the manager he never came. We asked again on the way out and he spoke to us, saying that the chef hadn't turned up for work and a replacement had only just arrived. Sorry don't find that good enough. Why accept orders for food if there is no one to cook them? What kind of a manager runs a catering house and isn't prepared [or capable] of taking over in the kitchen whenever necessary?

The dymock arms has finally opened and after a disappointing start there is finally customers returning to the pub and with the added pool table the younger members of the village are returning. Although we are returning it would be nice if the owner did not constantly run out of popular drinks. (i.e BEER)

well after hearing all the good reportes about the place i thought me and my wife should go well i was wrong. when i arrived at the naggs head the chefs were sitting the bar having a smoke and they all looked missrable on of the chefs had i pint of beer in his hand. we ordered the food and it took ages to come (maybe the chef was finishing off his drink) i ordered a cumbland curl and it was tough cold and the mash was lumpey. my wife ordered a pizza witch looked nice but when we looked underneath it was black and burned.

 Poor food
21st August 2006 after all the good reports we where given they where dashed with the food and drink. Steak was tough, mash was lumpy, coke was flat ,veg arrived 5 minutes after we had started . Overall a very poor meal in all and the Chef sitting in the bar looking fed up was not welcome site on arrival
Monday, August 21, 2006Rating: rosettes

Looks nice, shame about the food
We stopped at the Dymock Arms for a meal last night. On arrival, the lack of customers was a little worrying but the attractive exterior and pleasant interior with some orignal features made us feel less apprehensive. However, our meals were extremely disappointing and not in keeping with appearances. The beef and ale pie could hardly be called a 'pie' as the piece of pastry was less than a couple of inches in diameter. The meat was dry, the sauce bland and the mashed potatoes were declared the worst tasted since school dinners. The sauce with my meal was far too sweet. To be fair, I would say that my vegetables were very good. Please sort this out. It's a great looking pub and with good food, I'm sure could be very successful.

New people have taken over at The Red Lion and the turnaround is amazing! Food is once again available and the welcome is warm and hospitable. A great improvement and long may it continue!
The customers are also some of the best in the country!

 Worst Pub I know
This was the worst pint of bitter I have ever tasted.
The staff were ignorant and the Landlord Rude

Went to a pub in the village of penley the other day and although was a bit dubious as to the amount of empty tables after talking with a very nice waitress we were made very comfortable, and the food was excellent. I believethe chef used to work at The Walls in oswestry, so the standard was not unexpected and although might seem pricey for a pub, for a restaurant its quite reasonable, and they do large parties there I believe, so well done to the owners, we will definateley be back

 sadly dissapointing
A late decision to eat out and give our local a chance was met with a very dissapointing end. We entered the empty restaurant (which was emphasised by the overcrowding of tables) at 8.50 pm only to be told quite simply that the chef had already left.Maybe this was for the best as many have said it is overpriced - a friend had ordered the pork fillets only to be served a single fatty pork-chop. No effort was made to encourage us to possibly return and we left very dissapointed. I can though recommend the cross foxes, who not only offered us a free starter on our next booking (as they were also unable to entertain us with food-due to being full rather than no chef present) and a very pleasant, encouraging service.
Can i suggest a move to side with the locals and offer a more realistic service of bar meals and special offers?

A Country Pub & Restaraunt with a difference.
The old building has many charming features, including real fires and a warm welcome. The staff are friendly and the location is peaceful. I found the carvery to be exceptional value and the extensive menu provides something for everyone. Children are welcome, and there's even a bunny ranch and play area. The extensive bar serves many ales and lagers, with a phenomenal array of spirits and liquers. The wine list is more than adequate, with something to suit every palate and everyones pocket. We made the journey from Manchester and I heartily recommend a visit and will certainly return.

 good job!!!
A recently re-opened pub which we tried is at penley near wrexham, very smart inside with a non-smoking restaurant, but allowed in the bar, food excellent, high quality at reasonable prices, think it will do well. Well done!!!

The Oak Tree is responsible for the utter devastation of my social life outside of the pub. But with this pub you don't need anywhere else.
Best beer in Wrexham, Fantastic bar staff. Lots of Brian to take the piss out of. Mmm. I fancy a pint now.

Nookie and Paddongton
 Nookie needs beer!!!
Having become a part-time resident in Penley recently I have noticed that there is a distinct lack of places to drink. At the tender age of 21 I feel it is only right that I should be able to express myself through drinking copious amounts of beer and staggering home in the early hours amusing my neighbours, but am unable to do this! I know a certain chap accross the way that has even taken up golf through lack of alcohol and I assure you this is a bad thing! He needs beer as do I and we need the Dymock arms to open soon otherwise we may take up such sports as croquet and crown green bowling to make up the time which should be spent drinking in our local!

 The Golden Grove
One of the best places for a Carvery in the area. Very pleasant pub with plenty of character. Lovely garden and play area. Good place to eat - outside in the summer or inside when chillier. Can always rely on the Carvery = always served with a wide range of nicely cooked fresh vegetables.

Man Without Pub
The nicest closed pub in Penley
I can honestly say that when it comes to pubs which are not open to the general public the Dymock Arms is far and away the best one in Penley.

One day before I die I would like to sit inside it and drink some beer. I would also like to see the Taj Mahal and to fly in space. It's too early to say which ambition is closest to fulfilment.

 closed until furter notice
This public house could have been demolished and rebuilt in a shorter time than this refurbishment.
The Bar could have been opened for drinkers years ago, allowing locals to use the pub, while the other work was ongoing.
Local people have various opinions as to how the landlord can fund the refurbishment with no income for three years. It simply does not make financial sense to shut a busy pub for this amount of time.
Progress is painfully slow, as was the service in the pub before closure.
I only hope new owners are imminent, as locals have now expressed no wish to use the pub under current ownership.
If the landlord is deluded enough to believe he can run an a la carte restaurant in penley, ignoring drinkers, he is an idiot.

Frustrated drinker
Please hurry up and open !
Pub shut 3 years now entire village fed up. No doubt this clown is waiting for the 100 odd new houses to be occupied before opening, but this seems unfair on scores of long standing local customers, many of over 50 years of Dymocks drinking.

old penley
 getting very thirsty now
I think this pub has been closed for too long now and as this is the only pub in the village and it is too far to walk to another pub I am getting very lonely and thirsty, at my time of life it is hard not getting to see my friends regularly and if I were to get the bus to the next village I would get drunk and miss the last bus home and I cannot afford a taxi

i brought part of my family 8 members to your pub. i pre booked i visited the night before toi make sure all was well. the table was not ready and wasny for at least three quarters of an hour. we tried to order the barman didnt know ether to take our order or if others would take it. finally we orderes after over an hour. the food arrived, most of it over cooked, we ate it because no one came to ask is the meal ok. what wa sleft , a lot, was finally taken away. we were never asked was it ok , would you like sweets or coffee, when we finally complained a tyoung guy cam out thandling a piece of meat allegedly rare but looking into the meat it was burnt on the edges and pink only in the very middle, it was also not from any of our plates as he claimed. no recompense was offered , no effort made by the owners to speak to us . The attitude seemed to be send out the cook and let him take the flack. I will let my friends know of our experience
